Two White Cranes. Jump to Bristol, UK, in order to meet Roxy Brennan, a musician active for more than a decade now, mostly known as a member of Joanna Gruesome, Grubs and Trust Fund. But she also has another project, one that under this moniker reveals a softer but still bursting side, warm and intense, approach to folk-pop. First songs surfacing at her bandcamp in 2013, but her official debut release , in the form of a self-titled album, which arrived in September 2014 via Stitch-Stitch Records. In August 2015 she released sophomore LP Radisson Blue through Odd Box Records to overwhelming praise. Raw, pure and honest blend of indie pop and folk, heartfelt and melancholic. A thing of beauty for sure.

Joanna Gruesome’s Roxy Brennan – released her second album ‘Radisson Blue’ last year, and is now back with a new track, ‘Unattached’, premiering on DIY.

The song, recorded at the new Cellar Tapes recording studio in Bristol, is the first to be taken from Art Is Hard Recordsnew Pin Pal Club, with a song released on a pin badge on the last Friday of every month this year.

‘Unattached’ is a clear step up, with guitars grittier than before, and layered, floaty vocals proving the focal point. While remaining a solo song, there’s a hell of a lot going on here. Check out the earlier Two White Cranes release another pure gem

Simple Things returns to Bristol in 2015 with a special opening party on the Friday and a full day of musical diversity on the Saturday. Full lineup and ticketing information at: www.simplethingsfestival.co.uk.

This year’s standalone opening party will be headlined by legendary Montreal post-rock band Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Initially formed in 1994, the band has become revered among the greatest purveyors of their widescreen, orchestral strain of rock music, with 2000’s Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven regarded as one of the genre’s definitive landmarks. Armed with this year’s superb Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress, the nine-piece will fill the very farthest reaches of Colston Hall’s grandiose main room on Friday night.

Brooklyn-based experimental math-rock adventurers Battles head up the main festival bill, picking up where Liars left off last year. The pioneering trio have returned in 2015 with rumours of a third long-player on Warp and only a handful of intimate, sold-out shows worldwide. This will be an extremely rare headline performance for the band.

Arthur Jeffes brings his current incarnation of the highly regarded Penguin Cafe (previously Penguin Cafe Orchestra), an array of classically trained musicians mixing hypnotic, Philip Glass-style minimalism with folk and world music. Percussive and string music that magics up something mesmerising in sound.

Post-punk/art-punk royalty Wire bring their extensive back catalogue, including cuts from peerless 1977 debut Pink Flag, to proceedings, while Gabe Gurnsey and Nik Void will be flying the Factory Floor flag and offering their trademark propulsive percussion and convulsive synths.

Dean Blunt – renowned for consistently delivering compelling and unpredictable performances, often emitting ferocious strobes, dry ice and searing emotional catharsis – will also be stepping on stage.

One of the originators of Chicago’s ghetto house sound and Dance Mania stalwart DJ Funk will also be playing a rare live performance. Elsewhere recent Ninja Tune Romare will deliver his collaged, cut’n’paste style, informed by his African American Visual Culture academic background.

“Going Straight” by Candy Darling is available on white vinyl, c.d and download at
http://www.candydarlingmusic.bandcampCandy Darling – Going Straight available on DL | 7″ Vinyl

Bristol’s Shining Rock Diamond, CANDY DARLING, have just released their second single, ‘Going Straight today, which they celebrated with a record launch party at The Fleece.

The single, titled Going Straight, tells a familiar story of the cyclic redemption of wanting to turn ones’ life around. Emily Breeze’s switchblade sharp delivery and authentic conviction is utterly arresting. It’s creeping tempo, spectral keyboard and piano make way for epic guitar playing that reminds one of The Jesus & Mary Chain. Better still, though, is the B side, Waves, a New Wave ripper that sends shivers up your spine with it’s incessantly catchy melody.

One of the Great X-Pectations for 2015, 20-year-old Rebecca Clements is from Bristol and will be familiar to some through her singles “Wildlife” and “Lovechild” from last year – both released on her own Coma Girl Records. Rebecca plays Communion’s Bushstock festival in Shepherd’s Bush on 13th June.

The KVB band members Nicholas Wood & Kat Day  The dark-as-night duo join the ranks of the Bristol label. The KVB have kept up a vigorous work rate since Nicholas Wood and Kat Day teamed up in 2010, releasing several cassettes and limited CD-Rs before their full-length “Always Then”  arrived in 2012. That was followed in 2013 by “Immaterial Visions” on Minimal Wave offshoot Cititrax and a remix EP featuring Regis and Silent Servant, while last year they recorded their “Out Of Body” EP at the Berlin studio of Brian Jonestown Massacre mastermind Anton Newcombe. The latest effort from the psych-drone-darkwave duo is Mirror Being, which appeared in a run of 100 cassettes at the start of the year and is now set to get a full vinyl release on Geoff Barrow’s Invada Records. According to the label, it was after hearing Mirror Being’s shoegazey electronics that they decided to snap up the band, who’ve just flown into Bristol to start recording a brand new full length for Invada Records, expected to appear later this year.

Candy Darling‘s debut single ‘Money’ describing it as ‘a curb crawling sleazy slice of proto punk noir.’ Their follow up tune ‘Going Straight’ sees them in a rather more reflective mood, with singer Emily Breeze channelling the spirit of Joan Jett, Debbie Harry, Alison Mossheart, and Chrissie Hynde with some aplomb. It’s a majestic soaring pop song, replete with Spector-esque drumbeats, subtle synths and impressive reverbing guitars.

It’s scheduled for release on 24th May and is backed by the equally impressive ‘Waves’ (which is far too good to be labelled a ‘B Side’) and is a tune that highlights the bands predilection for driving menacing guitars and a vocal that’s all sex, leather and swagger, delivered with more than a hint of the assertive imperiousness of Siouxsie. The overall impression you’re left with is that of a band who you just know will be fantastic live, and who prove that guitars will always be sexier than MacBook Pros

Bristol trio Candy Darling’s second single “Going Straight” b/w “Waves” is due for release 24th May

Candy Darling have lit the figurative tinderbox. Sounding as menacing as Suicide, their Martin Rev inspired keyboards support Emily Breeze’s lyrics which are every bit as tortured and cynical as a Lou Reed/Trent Reznor hybrid’ (NME)
