First saw All We Are supporting Public Service Broadcasting. The Liverpool-based trio announced they’d be playing new tracks and then move forward to now (well, a couple of weeks back to be fair) and Guro, Luis and Richard have shared something new online.

“Burn It All Out” feels like it could well act as a bridge from the laid back, psychedelic grooves of their eponymous debut album to the harder edged, more thunderous sounds that were trailed live. The opening guitar lines are gentle and swirly like a kaleidoscopic rainbow, then the beat and bass join in and that wonderfully familiar All We Are vibe begins to permeate your soul. Your shoulders move, your feet tap and your head bops as the compulsion to move and boogie along becomes overwhelming. The vocal floats like an intoxicating and heady aroma, hypnotising all who hear it before suddenly, the guitar has become harder, the rhythm more frantic and the bass heavier. Without you even realising, everything around you has been lain to waste and as you stand, amongst the rubble and ruin, you can only applaud and cry out for more.

A follow up album is on the way, so that more we crave so much will hopefully be with us soon.

It’s incredibly rare to find an album where you can say there’s not a bad song on it. Well, All We Are have accomplished this and made it sound effortless. The amalgamation of backgrounds and influences of the three musicians results in numerous highlights; the goose-bump-inducing sign off to Keep Me Alive, the slick bass riff on Utmost Good, and the simplistic beauty of Something About You which epitomised their set on the main stage at Liverpool Sound City are just a handful.

A sign of how remarkable the album is lies in the fact that we’re unable to put our finger on a favourite track – this prestigious title has changed hands at least half a dozen times. Single Honey is a pretty good starting point for newcomers but on an album rife with high points it’s best to digest it all in one hugely palatable portion.

Formed at Paul McCartney’s performing arts school, LIPA, this self-proclamation from Liverpool (via Norway/Ireland/Brazil) trio All We Are is a bit of a head scratcher if one only ever heard the barn burning single “Keep Me Alive”. Upon listening to the whole of the album, Stone (Domino Recordings), the description begins to make a little more sense, if only sporadically. Clearly not indicative of the whole of the album, “Keep Me Alive” is by far the standout, its dreamy guitar hooks and Guro Gikling’s haunting vocals  make the LP worth its salt for sure. Sprinkled among the ethereal guitar twinklings and charming falsetto-infused harmonies is a mix of soul, and  XXish basslines . As an album it is all over the place stylistically. To be perfectly honest, I had my fingers crossed and locked in hopes that the penultimate track “Something About You” would round things out and be a gazey, reworked Level 42 cover. Dreamy, yes, but also a lovely original .

All We Ares latest single “Stone” is primed to leave your belly delightfully full. This latest song exclusively features bassist Guro Gikling and her blissful, heaven-scraping vocals wading amidst an ether of reverb and twinkling guitar. Gikling floats breathily, anchored by merely the light but effective percussion. Hanging suspended at one point, perilously close to floating off to the never, the trio resets mid song and Gikling thrillingly pushes skyward and positively soars over the song’s final third.

ALL WE ARE – ” Feel Safe “

The debut track, Utmost Good“, from Liverpool’s All We Are.  There’s been nothing much from the group whatsoever, leaving us with nothing but sad faces. Fortunately, the band is back to end the misery and drought with the release of their brand-new effort, “Feel Safe”, and, as far as letting down goes, there’s none of that here, because there’s no way you’re not going to love how the trio harmonizes over disco-inspired and slow-grooving instrumentation. It’s everything you love about that throwback sound, yet, it’s still polished enough to fit right into 2014. Lets hope to hear more from this band this year next year I’m hoping for a full tour and lots of festival dates , sure they will be one of the bands to see in 2015.

All We Are are one of those bands with a geographical backlog that could make even the most seasoned gap-year students jealous. The threesome met at university in Liverpool but hail from Ireland (Richard, drums), Brazil (Luis, guitar) and Norway (Guro, bass). They’re basically the most jetsetting group I’ve seen since Il Divo burst on to the scene back in 2003.

Most recently the band have isolated themselves in the Norwegian mountains and the Welsh countryside. They’ve been writing their debut album, working with producer Dan Carey (M.I.A, Hot Chip, Bat For Lashes), and probably wearing a buttload of jumpers to keep them warm.

One of the first tracks to come from those sessions is “Keep Me Alive”. is an exquisite slice of comforting upbeat pop. Obviously the production is incredible, but I would argue it’s the voices – pulling you in, claiming to “hear nothing but your breathing” – that make this one of the most heartfelt and yearning tracks of the year.

The band making this sound is the Liverpool-based trio All We Are, who formed at the city’s talent-producing Institute For Performing Arts, Lipa. Then they were offered to tour with another great Scouse trio – Stealing Sheep.

After hearing their blend of beautiful, drowsy melodies I contacted them to find out more. They all met at Lipa’s international students orientation day – remembering they “had name tags and everything”. Bassist Guro Gikling is from Norway, drummer Rich O’Flynn from Ireland and guitarist Luís Santos from Brazil.
