Isabella Sophie Tweddle (born 27 May 1999), who performs under the stage name Billie Marten, is a singer-songwriter and musician from Ripon in  Yorkshire. She first came to prominence at the age of twelve when a video on she had made of her singing attracted thousands of views. She released her first EP at the age of fifteen in 2014, and her second EP a year later. At the end of 2015 she was nominated for the BBC Sound of 2016 award.

This now 16-year-old Yorkshire folk-rocker Billie Marten proved last year that she’s talented beyond measure and wise beyond her years. The new song “Milk & Honey” is Marten’s latest, and it continues showing us what an amazing talented young lady . What begins as a breathy acoustic swirl blooms into a lush arrangements topped off by triumphal brass. As ever, Marten sounds vulnerable yet in complete command of her considerable powers, Billie has the ability to become a huge important singer songwriter in the mould of Laura Marling , with the delivery and vocals talent to match Daughter’s Elena.

‘Bird’ was written with Olivia Broadfield and was a last resort sort of song. We hadn’t come up with anything all day until we switched from guitars to piano and I started singing nonsense words way up high and it sort of turned into this super sad song I guess about how words can really affect people, and not for the right reasons; how you can feel kind of trapped/caught in your own space all the time even when no-one is actually with you.”

long division

Now in it’s 5th year, Wakefields Long Division Festival has grown from strength to strength. In its short history the festival has grown in stature and played a significant part in getting the city’s old music venue, Unity Hall re-opened last year. In its heyday Wakefield and especially Unity Hall played host to some of the biggest names around – The Damned, The Specials, Iron Maiden, The Ramones, Eurythmics to name a few – So it’s great to see that thanks to Long Division, Wakefield is well and truly set once again to be put back at the top for live music in the North.

Dean Freeman, Long Division Founder:

“It’s hard to believe it’s five years since I started Long Division. Wakefield has come a long way in that time. The thing that excites me most about Long Division is that it still excites me. It’s still so much fun to organise, and to see and hear such amazing bands in my hometown. And then to meet people from all over the country who have travelled here and are having such a great time. I’ve just got back from a trip meeting the big artist booking agents in London; they all know about Wakefield now, because of this festival.
I’m so pleased to have Ash play in Wakefield. Although they are seen as a guitar band, I think they are one of the best pop bands ever. Tim Wheeler writes amazing, classic pop songs. Long Division has always been about true Indie music, the alternative, the DIY. I think Ash embody that, it just so happens they have some of the catchiest songs ever! To see and hear the sing-alongs in Unity Works will be amazing. And yet, they are only the tip of the iceberg for a line-up with over 80 bands.”

Returning this year to its familiar summer dates the weekend will take place from June 12th – 14th. Venues taking part this year include Unity Works Major and Minor Halls as the festival hub, with The Hop (Upstairs and downstairs), Wakefield Theatre Royal, The Orangery, Westgate Chapel and Players providing seven locations all within spitting distance of each other. With over 90 bands including loads of local talent and top names such as Ash, British Sea Power, Pulled Apart By Horses and The Fat White Family it looks set to be one of the best urban festivals of 2015.

Among the many acts the weekends highlights include –
Friday 12th June – British Sea Power play Unity Works (Playing a greatest hits set)
Saturday 13th June – One wristband, seven venues, 80 bands including Ash, Pulled Apart by Horses, Fat White Family and loads more to be announced.
Sunday 14th June – Watch a live album by The Ainsley Band being made. A special event at Unity Works in association with Greenmount Studios (The Cribs, Pulled Apart by Horses).

BRITISH SEA POWER | ASH | PULLED APART BY HORSES | FAT WHITE FAMILY | THE LOVELY EGGS | BOXED IN | MENACE BEACH | BRAWLERS | THE BURNING HELL | WITHERED HAND | TOM WILLIAMS | ROZI PLAIN | TUFF LOVE | CRYBABYCRY | HER NAME IS CALLA | SAM AIREY | ALGERNON DOLL | THE INCREDIBLE MAGPIE BAND | SEAZOO | THE AINSLEY BAND | FOREVER CULT | THOMAS WILBY GANG | NARCS | THE DO’S | FUR BLEND | BI-LINGUAL | CHARLIE PADFIELD | KLEINE SCHWEINE | LOZ CAMPBELL

deershed

The family friendly music, arts and science festival has just unveiled its first band announcements for this year’s event. Now firmly established as one of the jewels in the Northern festival crown, Deer Shed returns for its sixth annual outing over the last weekend July. And what a weekend it promises to be if the first artists for Deer Shed Festival 6 are anything to go by.

The term ‘family festival’ was invented to describe Deer Shed. In fact, if you don’t have any offspring in tow you may feel a little out of place. Even its comedy tent is PG-rated.  There is a huge array of children’s activities and family-friendly entertainment.  It would all be very village fete were it not for the fact that Deer Shed’s music-line up is pretty spot on. There are definitely some heritage acts to entertain the parents but there is also plenty of interesting new sounds and names familiar to 6 Music connoisseurs.  As you may imagine, the crowds are very polite, the toilets are clean and the mood is happy. Sadly, most of the fun draws to a close at around midnight, with only one venue open till 2 am and most of the entertainment ending on Sunday afternoon.

Music highlights: Billy Bragg, Boxed In, Emmy the Great, Honeyblood, John Grant,Menace Beach, The Pictish Trail, Shopping, The Unthanks, The Wedding Present

A cover of ‘Winter Song’ by Sara Bareilles and Ingrid Michaelson released for Coppafeel’s christmas compilation available through Bandcamp. At only fourteen-years of age, graceful singer-songwriter Billie Marten was already  beginning to fuse mature yet graceful vocals with stunning acoustic arrangements. Having posted video’s on YouTube for 2 years of originals, hauntingly performed on acoustic guitar, Billie has now accumulated hundreds of thousands of views whilst being lavished with complimentary comments. In just 2-years, Billie’s writing ability has evolved at a bewildering pace.

Her debut EP Ribbon is accompanied by other musicians, including a string quartet yet her voice continues to tenderly bewitch. Ribbon was written over the past 9 months when Billie began travelling between London and her hometown Ripon, North Yorkshire to discuss a musical career. The prevailing theme explores a teenagers venture into a business and big city.

deer shed 1

tomorrow we head up to the wonderful Deer Shed Festival held in beautiful North Yorkshire Parkland at Baldersby Park this is one of my favourite festivals, this year the line up is definitely guitar led with some of the music press saying guitar bands are boring and dying out, this line up where we have some of the most ferocious and exciting guitar bands of the year WOLF ALICE, CATFISH and The BOTTLEMEN, PINS, HAPPYNESS, PAWS, GIRLS NAMES, and of course one of this generation’s best guitar players ever with some of the most memorable riffs ever written with the Smiths, Modest Mouse , The Cribs bands or solo Mr JOHNNY MARR.
I urge you to see all of the bands Ive mentioned above, they are among the most exciting new young bands, all with some amazing tunes in their repertoire . You Should also try to catch opener BLEECH another superb live band. TOY a little psychedelic and another live band that unmissable.CHEETAHS have put out some great stuff this year, then we have the supremely gorgeous full of luscious synths WOMAN’S HOUR, with the similar synth led songs LYLA FOY a dreamy pop who previously had the moniker WALL with an outstanding song “Magazine” . American singer songwriter SAMANTHA CRAIN,  Welsh Singer-Songwriter CATE LE BON who appears to be moving away from the dark folk  sound to a more aggressive rock sound with her fantastic live band including Sweet Baboo in  up and finally on the Sunday Charles and Rebecca from the band SLOW CLUB who have produced the album everyone knew they were capable of in this weeks release “Complete Surrender” and be sure to catch the very talked about NORDIC GIANTS who have won awards for their film shorts played behind the band,

so see you all there have a great time and dont forget to see Paul Tonkinson in the comedy area
