With lyrics in both their native Swedish and the Swedish musical language of choice, English, Amason create in the moment, record almost instantaneously, and soon after scan the horizons for a stage, where the music truly comes alive, where they can share their collected collective moments. They fill their together time with sound, with music-making, with production and lyric-crafting and the joy of the song. Not to say that they don’t have to work to create what they get. Bringing five busy people together and getting crafted songs down in a state of permanence is a mammoth undertaking in and of itself. But as the old adage goes, where there is a will, there is a way. And the Amason will, the Amason way, is celebrated and magnified and revolves around the power of music. While the classic Volvo Amason still motors onwards in its intention to take people places, so too will a pure love of music drive Amason the band far into the future.

On May 12th, The Tallest Man on Earth, aka Kristian Matsson, will release his new album Dark Bird Is Home“. among the first tracks to preview, Matsson has shared this the first taste of the album. Listen to “Sagres”

By the time “Dark Bird Is Home” lands, nearly three years will have flown by since the last release of The Tallest Man on Earth. In that time, while Swedish singer-songwriter Kristian Matsson spread his wings across the world to captivate large audiences with his one-person show, he was also laying down new songs wherever he could in various locations — sometimes studios, sometimes barns.

Our first glimpse of Dark Bird Is Home is “Sagres,” named for the remote cliff-side village in southern Portugal, a place of escape for the song’s heartbroken narrator. Despite its potential loneliness, “Sagres” finds Mattson with perhaps his largest production to date. Lush orchestration holds the airy melody aloft, as violin, mandolin, acoustic and electric guitar, castanet punctuated percussion and haunting backing vocals join in the soul-searching quest. He also just announced an extensive tour—find the dates below. This is Matsson’s first time touring with a full band.

A lot of artists have covered Tim Hardin’s  song “Reason To Believe,” this folk ballad written in 1965 by the late singer-songwriter.  Covers by Marianne Faithful, Neil Young and Rickie Lee Jones. But few have breathed as much heartache  and longing as this new version from Sweden’s Alice Boman .

Shot in a large, empty hall at Hotel Blume in Baden, Switzerland, the video is as spare and remote as Alice Boman’s arrangement. “Knowing that you lied straight-faced while I cried,” she sings, with only her piano and incidental sounds to accompany her  “Still I look to find a reason to believe.” . While Tim Hardin’s original version of “Reason To Believe” has an almost breezy swing to it, Boman slows it way down and finds its most broken pieces. “I love this song,” she says. “The melody. And the directness of it. It’s one of those lyrics that just hit you, and you cannot not listen.” Boman says her version was inspired by singer Karen Dalton’s cover. Boman has released two EPs, Skisser and EP II.

Swedish singer-songwriter Alice Boman recently released her latest collection of work, simply titled EP II. The album includes straightforward lyrics and an emphasis on her vocals, and although it’s already receiving plenty of love from critics, Alice Boman isn’t finished recording music for fans. She’s released a cover of The War On Drugs’ “Red Eyes” that reveals her versatility.

“I love this band and this song is one of my favorites of theirs,” she said. “The guitars and the atmosphere in it. I’ve had it on repeat.” Boman says that singing cover songs carries a special kind of weight.

“There is such a joy in singing the songs of others,” she said. “Especially when they’re not so similar to what you write yourself. It’s interesting how those songs sometimes make me use my voice in a new or slightly different way… Discovering things, little things. Thats inspiring. ‘Red Eyes’ is one of those songs and I like how it feels, singing it. The melody and the rhythm of the words.”

Why You Should Pay Attention to this Swedish soul singer Seinabo Sey pronounce it “say-na-bo see,” she admits “hasn’t gotten the hang of EDM,” After her procrastination-busting anthem “Younger” with the chorus which goes “You ain’t getting any younger, are you?” got remixed by Norwegian producer Kygo, it racked up over 10 million SoundCloud plays, millions of YouTube views and hit Number One on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart. Last December, she performed the song as it appears on her new EP, “For Madeleine” , with a symphony orchestra at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo.Madeleine shows off Sey’s versatile vocal timbre. Now perfecting her debut album, she hopes to release it later this year in 2015.

The first time I had to perform by myself, I was 13 or 14. It was in order to get a grade in school. Prior to that I’d sing in choirs, so I never had to sing solo. Afterwards, I thought maybe I’m better at this than some people. I was happy that I had done something that I was very scared to do.
Americans will listen to new songs like you’ve never heard, and like them. In Sweden, people stand there and listen, and then applaud in between. They appreciate it, but they don’t show it ’til the song is over.

Swedish band Slowgold sound like a band from a different time and place entirely, and with their website namechecking the likes of Gene Clark and Neil Young,
This E.P’s press release makes it clear that frontperson Amanda Werne for all intents and purposes Is Slowgold, I’d anticipated a much sparser collection of songs than what is on offer here. Werne is certainly a charismatic presence, with the sort of massive voice you’d expect to hear at a late sixties festival in San Francisco, but the band members she’s roped in are certainly no slouches either, accentuating that relaxed San Francisco jam band sound, and combining it with spacious Laurel Canyon loveliness. I can’t help but be reminded of the loose, communal vibe of David Crosby’s “If I Could Only Remember My Name”, particularly the lyrical lead guitar work which alternates between tasteful picking and the carefully selected, echoing off the canyon, single note runs of Neil Young.

“Finland” proves that Werne could go it alone however, needing little more than her acoustic guitar, harmonica, and vocal to captivate. And as powerful as her voice is, she’s also capable of moments of quiet subtlety, like the hazy acoustic dreampop of “Våren”, which has the gentle melodic pull of Mazzy Star.
There’s more than enough evidence on this E.P that Werne is an exciting proposition for the future, and that she has the very best taste in collaborators. Anyone with even the remotest interest in albums from the tail end of the sixties / start of the seventies, or Cosmic American music in general owes it to themselves to check this out, starting with the video.

TOVE LO – ” Talking Body “

It takes a second listen to realize that Tove Lo is a tortured soul. And if not that, she at least has a knack for hitting listeners right in the gut. Hidden behind a thick veil of club-ready beats and effects lie the Swedish songstress’ fears and narratives of dissolved relationships.

Before she broke out with Truth Serum and earworm single “Habits (Stay High)”, Tove Lo worked as a songwriter for contemporaries such as Icona Pop. She then pursued a solo career to support songs that were too personal.

And while Lo’s material is musically uplifting, there’s something that leaves you feeling depressed: her stories. Even her more positive lyrics, like “Baby listen please, I’m not on drugs, I’m not on drugs, I’m just in love,” are touched with a tinge of sadness. Lo’s killer, though, is “Habits (Stay High)”, where she self-medicates with drugs, sex and alcohol to distract – not even heal – her broken heart: “Spend my days locked in a haze/ Trying to forget you babe/ I fall back down… Gotta stay high.” Listen to Queen of the Clouds without getting bummed out

If you were able to catch Swedish sisters Klara and Johanna Söderberg live in 2014, you’d know that the song “Master Pretender” was one of the highlights of First Aid Kit’s set – the apex of their alt-country musings on the purpose of life and various other existential questioning set to a dusty desert lilt.
