Brave is a sword song. Writing it made me feel armed to face my lesser self. Because becoming a better version of myself requires taking account of the painful missteps along the way and fighting the anguish of facing them. And to ultimately (and hopefully) come out better than who I was before. Taller and stronger. This is the highest achievement a human being can hope for, everything else is secondary.

In conjunction with the song, Kelly will release a new “Brave” t-shirt today with a design featuring his handwritten lyrics. All proceeds from t-shirt sales will be donated to MusiCares.
The new song adds to a breakthrough series of years for Kelly, whose most recent project, Dirt Emo Vol. 1, was released this past fall via Rounder Records (stream/purchase here). Co-produced by Kelly and Jarrad K, the eight-song release consists of Kelly’s favorite songs including a rendition of Dashboard Confessional’s “Screaming Infidelities” featuring the band’s lead singer Chris Carrabba, a live cover of Wheatus’ “Teenage Dirtbag” and new versions of The Carter Family’s “Weeping Willow” and Taylor Swift’s “All Too Well.”
Kelly’s version of “All Too Well” was released to widespread critical praise and garnered attention from Swift herself. Billboard declared, “Kelly puts his own haunting spin on the track with yearning vocals, delicate percussion and soaring instrumentation,” while UPROXX praised, “his rendition is a beautiful tribute to the raw emotionality of the original. He makes the song his own with atmospheric instrumentals, replacing Swift’s driving percussion with drums that sound more soft and searching.”
The EP follows the release of Kelly’s critically acclaimed, full-length debut album, Dying Star, in the fall of 2018 . Co-produced by Kelly and Jarrad K, Dying Star landed on several “Best of 2018” lists including Rolling Stone, Paste, UPROXX, American Songwriter and NPR Music, which declared, “Kelly digs down deep on Dying Star to fearlessly put forth a set of songs steeped in emotional twists, turns and complications…This here is powerful stuff.”

On Friday, emerging singer-songwriter Katie Pruitt released a new single entitled “Expectations” as well as a corresponding music video. The single is the first off of Pruitt’s debut album coming from Rounder Records. While the details of the album haven’t been released, Pruitt has garnered enough buzz and excitement from her live shows and 2018’s OurVinyl Live EP that this name-yet-to-be-revealed record could be an electrifying debut.

The single demonstrates what Pruitt does best: blend indie rock, Americana and solid songwriting. With a sound that can almost be compared to Pinegrove meets Lori McKenna, “Expectations” is a feel good song that fits right into Pruitt’s canon of addressing human topics such as religion, mental health, and love. It’s hard not to feel a sense of relief when you hear Pruitt’s smooth voice exclaim:

“Some days I don’t know who to trust / In the rain my spirit starts to rust / she said ‘you’re being way too generous / with all the fucks you’re giving.’”

Katie Pruitt is the newest star of modern Americana. She grew up in the suburbs of Atlanta with a conservative family, attending Catholic school. “Expectations” carries us through her self-discovery away from home, as she comes to terms with her sexuality and navigates the transition to adulthood. “I wanted to be honest / I wanted to be brave,” she sings on the track, “Georgia,” “But if my grandmother knew / She would roll in her grave / And my father would scream / He’d scream out in rage / He did not want a daughter whose soul wasn’t saved.” The tension that defined her coming-of-age is translated perfectly into music; her voice glides with ease the tone of a lullaby to that of a rock song, while the band seems to hang on each word. It’s not often that you see a debut record that introduces an artist so perfectly both musically and personally; each song is purposeful and necessary to tell Pruitt’s story.

Mikaela makes her full-length debut with Delivery on Rounder Records, which was produced by John Congleton (St. Vincent, Future Islands, Angel Olsen, Alvvays). Delivery is a thrilling adventure over 10 tracks: a sonic exploration that challenges what the harp can do, and one that details the sometimes arduous path to self-acceptance and feeling comfortable in your own skin. Album opener and title track “Delivery” is a stunning entry point, a touch of gospel piano and plucked bass that bursts into a wall of sound.  It begins with lyrics of disillusionment: “Well you know I tried prayin’ / tried to wish it all away / even tried to meditating / but the feeling stayed the same,” and shifts to a triumphant acceptance of steadfast love.  As the album unfurls, it’s dabbed with synths, fuzzed out bass and guitar, harp cascades and ping-pong effects.  Mikaela’s voice shines on top – a little raspy with a range that goes from whisper to wail.

Gregg Allman's 'Southern Blood'

Gregg Allman’s final LP “Southern Blood” will be released posthumously on September 8th and the first track is now available to stream in the form of the song “My Only True Friend.”

Co-written with longtime musical director Scott Sharrard,  The song recalls stories from Allman’s past with brother Duane. “I never told him because I didn’t want to spook him,” Sharrard said of writing the song with Duane in mind. “Since his brother was such an important figure in his life.”

The album also includes a number of covers including the Grateful Dead’s “Black Muddy River” along with songs from Bob Dylan, Little Feat, Jackson Browne and others. “He loved the guys in the Dead,” Sharrard said of Allman’s relationship with the band. “But I don’t know if that writing style was his bag in general. But he warmed up to the tune and in the end he thought, ‘Man, I kinda love this song.’”
