Unbridled American Rock and Roll – steeped in the mythology of the legendary songwriters and the almighty groove. Biting cynicism, instant classics, rip-your-heart-out live energy, a willingness to swagger, shred hard, and live behind the beat.

After a busy 2015 that saw several festival appearances, an Alaska tour, and the release of a 7″ Vinyl, Balto has put the finishing touches on its next full length LP. Recorded over a two week period in rural Oregon, the album is a mind-bending coming of age for the band, from pensive, anxious minimalism to boozy, groovy swagger. Look for it in summer 2016.

“Balto’s new 7-inch, Call It by Its Name, is great… [it] could well be one of the best local records dropped this year.”.

The Thermals, from Portland, Oregon a trio that specialize in quick hitting pop-punk that deals with love and love-related pain they don’t shy away from feelings. “Thinking of You,” was the latest track from the band’s  record, We Disappear, and it’s as direct as any in The Thermals’ canon.

In the press release, “Thinking of You” is described as “a bouncy, super-catchy blend of ’70s punk, ’80s pop, and classic Thermals new century angst.” That seems like a lot of different sounds to absorb, and you’ll have less than two minutes to process everything. But that’s ok, because The Thermals as always are masters of brevity.

“I’ve been listening to the voice inside my head, wishing I’d heard you instead,” sings Hutch Harris. “And when I thought about love, I was only thinking of us. When I thought of all the things I wanna do, I was only thinking of you.”

It’s punchy and uplifting and full of regret, all at the same time. It’s “one of the most straight-forward love songs we’ve ever written, a point-blank post-break up song,” said Harris

It really is, which makes “Thinking of You” exceptionally relatable. Does it evoke any memories of love or love lost for you? ,

SINLESS – ” Melodie “

The world may be in dire straits right now, but to make it all feel a little better take a listen to Portland band Sinless‘ new Melodie EP with its acid-tinged 60s sunshine pop. Opening cut Cool sets to tone for the EP with its fuzzy sun-kissed Britpop bliss, Cor Allen, the creative force behind this latest dream-pop gem.

The Portland-based five-piece features Cor Allen (vocals/guitar), John Walsh (guitar/synth), Pete Bosack (bass), Lynn Nicholson (drums), and “Baby” John Goforth (keyboards), and together they have produced four tracks of hazy memories of youth and innocent first crushes. Both Melodie, Sinless’ brand new release, and Ethereality, a four-song EP released in 2015, were fueled by a sense of loss that also inspired his move to the West Coast. The lyrics throughout Melodie cut insistently and quickly to that point. In the opening verse of “Strange Reality,” Allen sings, “I can’t seem to get over you.” He pairs these straightforward lyrics with ultra groovy guitar parts and lilting, psychedelic vocals that create an interesting paradox between words and music.

Sinless – Melodie EP is out later this month on Curly Cassettes, with the band currently also putting the finishing touches to their debut album produced by Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Riley Geare.

Moon Duo is a psych-rock/drone/krautrock band from Portland, Oregon by way of San Francisco. The project started in 2009 when Wooden Shjips guitarist Erik Ripley Johnson wanted a side band. He and Sanae Yamada (keys, vocals) joined forces, playing with programmed drums behind them. A couple of years ago, they hired drummer John Jeffrey to round out the band. Apparently, they had never met him, and they didn’t even audition him. He was hired after he met the band’s manager in Berlin. Things have worked out really well for them so far.

The band’s first album Mazes came out in 2011, followed by Circles in 2012. After that, they toured a lot. Not wanting to do that “write the new record on the road” thing, they waited until there was a big gap in their touring schedule to write and record Shadow of the Sun.

Moon Duo’s Occult Architecture Vol. 1, the first installment of a two-part album by the Portland psych heroes. The albums were inspired by the occult writings of Mary Anne Atwood, Aleister Crowley, Colin Wilson, and Manly P. Hall, as well as the Chinese theory of Yin and Yang. The darker Vol. 1 is being released in the dead of winter in the Northern Hemisphere (February. 3rd), and it represents Yin, or “the shady side of the hill.” Vol. 2 will follow in warmer months. Note: The limited edition LP of Vol. 1 comes housed in a deluxe box, which includes a space for Vol. 2 should you wish to purchase that when it comes out

You can get some of the krautrock flavor in this song. The buzzy synths, the motorik-style drums, the delayed vocals. I love it. And of course it’s a little drone-y. It’s infectious, and I love it. It’s actually a little dark and gothy.

Here’s the official video for the song, which features Australian skateboarder Richie Jackson using all sorts of things including a pitchfork, a computer keyboard, and a car’s front bumper to make improvised skateboards. He also walks along in a ridiculously exaggerated gait, which spotlights the motorik beat. Make sure you watch the video all the way to the end.

What’s left to say about Moon Duo – not much, except that they continue on that cyclical drone path into musical nirvana. Divine.

The best thing about discovering a band like Small Leaks Sink Ships from the wonderful music city of Portland own Small Leaks Sink Ships have signed to Lefse Records for their debut album release.  This tight-knit group has overcome tremendous adversity and keep cranking out powerful, expansive and mind-blowing alt/post rock, but it is amazing realizing how long they’ve been quietly releasing great music, Find yourself falling down a musical rabbit’s hole, digging through their back catalogue. because their forthcoming full-length album Face Yourself, and Remove Your Sandals is an intricate listen, It’s just the thing we’d expect from a band that continues to chug along, stumbling over pleasant surprises along the way.,

Check out a whole slew of good stuff from these guys. Lefse Records

EYELIDS – ” Slow It Goes “

From Portland, OR comes lopsided rock for everyone’s skulls. We’ve created music as members of The Decemberists, Guided By Voices, The Jicks, Boston Spaceships. Portland’s Eyelids, which features The Decemberists‘ John Moen, and former Guided by Voices member Chris Slusarenko, have a new single out, “Slow it Goes,” which is the kind of relaxed, catchy guitar pop you’d expect from these two. We’re premiering its music video, directed by Slusarenko and John Clark. It was inspired by weird ’60s German variety shows and is full of face paint, go-go dancers (choreographed by The Dead Set Lead Society) and nonstop camera movement. You can check it out below.
In other news, Eyelids have a bunch of irons in the fire, music wise. They are currently working on their new LP, again produced by REM’s Peter Buck. They’ve also got a Record Store Day 7″ on the way too featuring guest vocals from Gary Jarman of The Cribs that is “projected post-punk that is written from the fictitious mind of a 17 year old.”

The debut solo album by Typhoon frontman Kyle Morton available everywhere now and on vinyl via Bug Hunt.
Typhoon is an band from Portland, OR. They’ve released three albums and will be releasing their fourth in 2017.

Kyle will embark on his first solo US tour in January 2017 in support of What Will Destroy You. Sets will feature music from the album, as well as Typhoon fan favorites and songs from the band’s forthcoming full length album, which is set for release in 2017. The solo tour sees Kyle trading in the expansive venues that generally house Typhoon’s concerts, like New York’s Webster Hall and DC’s 9:30 Club, for the intimate environs of Rough Trade NYC and DC’s Sixth & I Synagogue, creating a special evening for those in attendance.

Of the album, Kyle says, “Most of these songs were written in about a day, many of them while walking aimlessly around Portland, others wrote themselves in the moments just before sleep. They were recorded and mixed with the invaluable help of Paul Laxer from the inviolate comfort of his living room, mostly in the evenings during the winter and early spring of 2015. At the outset there was no deliberate attempt at an overarching concept, though once finished and lined up together the theme of my subconscious was revealed to me: this was a record about love, more specifically (not devolving into platitudes just yet), the ambivalence of erotic love.”

“With a couple exceptions these songs are about kinds of love, from old fashioned heartache to acute sadomasochism; some drawn from personal experience and others extrapolated from years of keen observation on the subject.”
