Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real added to their Soundcheck Songs video performance series with a live cover of Neil Young‘s lengthy “Like An Inca”, which was shared on Thursday. The latest addition to the country-rock outfit’s ongoing studio series follows the first two videos where they covered Paul Simon‘s “Obvious Child” and Dire Straits‘ “Romeo and Juliet”. Though Young’s original recording clocks in at 9:46 minutes, Nelson and his Promise Of the Real band manage to stretch the song just a tad for their live studio version. The new video presents the band in their studio while also blending in some nature-inspired psychedelic visuals during the 11:30 minute performance.

Young’s “Like An Inca” appears on his 1982 album, Trans. Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real are certainly familiar with the tune as they’ve been Neil’s backing band since 2015. Neil dusted off the song with Promise of the Real for the first time since 1982 in 2016, as per Sugar Mountain. Lukas Nelson & POTR cover Lukas’s song choice of “Romeo and Juliet” by Dire Straits.

The Soundcheck Songs performance sees Micah Nelson — who is a member of Neil Young & POTR — on slide guitar. As per custom with the new series, the cover was chosen by a member of Promise of the Real, which this week was percussionist Tato Melgar.

Straddling rock and roll, country, soul, folk and R&B, Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real reach a new high-water mark on Turn Off The News (Build A Garden). This is Lukas Nelson at his best: as a songwriter, a singer, a guitarist and band leader – an artist at the peak of his powers, backed by Promise Of The Real, his nimble and dexterous brothers-in-arms, one of the most talented, in-demand rock and roll ensembles working today. Vocal and instrumental contributions on the album include Margo Price, Sheryl Crow, Willie Nelson, Micah Nelson, Kesha, Shooter Jennings, Randy Houser, Lucius, Madison Ryann Ward, Hunter Elizabeth, and Neil Young.

Whether it’s the sweeping, Roy Orbison-influenced production of “Where Does Love Go”, nodding to the Traveling Wilburys on the irresistible “Bad Case”, the cosmic country vibes of “Stars Made Of You”, the ‘60s infused sweet R&B of “Save A Little Heartache”, or the unmistakable Willie Nelson guitar licks that grace the poignant “Mystery”, it all comes together in the most mature and absorbing work of the band’s burgeoning career.

Lukas Nelson and Promise Of The Real are a must-see. The band are gaining a steadily-growing fan base over the past two years. Their frontman, Lukas Nelson, joins the ranks of other sons and daughters of country music greats such as Justin Townes Earle, Holly Williams and Rosanne Cash. He made his first claim to fame in 2012 when he collaborated with his father, the legendary Willie Nelson, on the album Heroes. Young Nelson recently said to the Delaware County Daily Times that his father’s greatest lesson was teaching him the art of “being yourself” and “staying true to your [artistic] values.”

His band was soon plucked from the ever-deep pool of alt-country and Americana talent by Neil Young, who became a mentor for the now 28-year-old. Nelson’s self-titled album was released in August this year, drawing influence from his father’s legacy, as well as Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings, and it features a guest appearance from Lady Gaga on the latest rendition of hit track, ‘Find Yourself’.

The notable softie said of his craft, “When you play music, when you’re living life, it’s all about finding a place where you’re not thinking and you’re living from your heart.” Growing up between Austin and the island of Maui, Hawaii, he describes himself as a surfing cowboy, which explains the band’s ‘cowboy hippy surf rock’ tagline. His attraction to country music as a teen provided a way to connect with his father, who was often on the road. The band is famous for its high-energy performances, as Nelson’s classic country tunes are also inspired by the likes of Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendix.
