When Deltasonic boss Alan Wills passed away in such tragic, sudden circumstances the impact rocked not just Merseyside’s cultural community – but the world of music.

Known for his infectious enthusiasm, whirlwind persona, familial values and ear for spotting talent – it was no surprise that the man who cultivated the talents of The Coral, Zutons and a whole generation of new Merseybeaters was hailed a colossusBut Alan was a restless individual – and his search for the new was as fond as his love for New Balance trainers – and his last great musical discovery ranks up there with his best.

The Vryll Society have been on the radar of *everyone* for sometime. But similarly to that first wave of Deltasonic artists, Alan and his partner Ann, nurtured and honed them until they were truly ready.

Originally The Dirty Rivers, these ‘kids’ produced an astonishing an early single The Kid which lay the foundation for what was to come: a tidal wave of energy, cataclysmic guitar swells, propulsive rhythmical thunder and a front man whose magneticism proved impossible to ignore.

Imagine The Rolling Stones channelling Storm in Heaven-era Verve through the spirit of Austin’s Black Angels with infinite more grooves and you’re nearly there. On record they are great, live they are truly unstoppable.

After a considerable time shaping plans and sounds, they’ve conquered Sound City and FestEvol on the home front while an October UK tour and festival dates including End of The Road.

Official Video for Open Heart Surgery by Elevant. Initially formed as a recording project, but now a band in every sense of the word. In our short life since our inception near the start of 2014 we’ve released two albums on our own record label and toured the country multiple times. Our self titled debut came out September 2014, and the new record, “Dreamface”, in March 2015. Industrious little scamps aren’t we!

We’re ravenous music obsessives and incorporate a broad palette of flavours into our sound, drawing from psychedelia, hard rock, post punk, doom, shoegaze, post hardcore, noise rock, krautrock, blues and pretty much anything else we love.

Michael Edward – Guitar/Vocals
Hannah Lodge – Bass Guitar
Thomas Shand – Drums

Their debut single Deep Blue Skies is a statement – a swirling mass of kaleidoscopic riffs, Nuggets-era melodies over-laid by Mike Ellis’ blissed-out vocals. There’s even better to come.

Elevant is the brainchild of Songwriter/Singer/Guitarist Michael Edward. Heralding from Liverpool’s rich creative melting pot, it was initially formed as a recording project but has metamorphosed into a full band, drawing on influences in hard rock, psychedelia, post punk, rock and roll, krautrock and blues, plus whatever else happens to cross our ears, Check them out Live…..Not to mention the Elevant’s wide range of musical influences, for example; hard rock, psychedelia, post punk, rock and roll and krautrock and blues – to name but a few of the sounds heard during the evening from the band. As soon as they began to play the audience seemed to double in size and everyone was geared up for something special which is rare with such a new band, however they deserved the buzz! Each song played was unique, which is a task in itself with the vast amount of new music about in Liverpool. But most importantly they most definitely enjoyed themselves, taken away in the moment, which was incredibly entertaining. I would state they are on of the best live bands in the UK! I suggest you go and see them while they are on the up.

Elevant are:
Michael Edward – Guitars/Vocals
Joe Hutchinson – Bass Guitar/Organ/Backing Vocals
Tom Shand – Drums/Percussion

Guests:
Em Eccles (of The Stowaways) – Backing Vocals on Inhale/Exhale
Beth Ryal – Spoken Word on Is This It

Following on from last year’s unmitigated success, Liverpool Music Week returns at the end of October for what will be its 11th annual outing. This year the event will showcase no less than 150 acts playing 20 amazing events. This well-established festival launches with an opening party at the multi-venue Kazamier complex featuring one of the most talked-about experimental artist, Holly Herndon, and her fellow art-pop explorers Micachu & the Shapes, and ends nine days later with its famous closing party at Camp and Furnace with a gigantic serving of new and established international talent.
In the interim, there is plenty of special shows, collaborations and performances in unique spaces, such as the intimate surroundings of the Scandinavian Church and the Dome of the stunning Grand Central Hall.

Music highlights: All We Are, Baio, Deerhunter, Gang of Four, Josh T. Pearson, Holly Herndon, Meilyr Jones, Richard Hawley, SOAK, Stealing Sheep

Formed at Paul McCartney’s performing arts school, LIPA, this self-proclamation from Liverpool (via Norway/Ireland/Brazil) trio All We Are is a bit of a head scratcher if one only ever heard the barn burning single “Keep Me Alive”. Upon listening to the whole of the album, Stone (Domino Recordings), the description begins to make a little more sense, if only sporadically. Clearly not indicative of the whole of the album, “Keep Me Alive” is by far the standout, its dreamy guitar hooks and Guro Gikling’s haunting vocals  make the LP worth its salt for sure. Sprinkled among the ethereal guitar twinklings and charming falsetto-infused harmonies is a mix of soul, and  XXish basslines . As an album it is all over the place stylistically. To be perfectly honest, I had my fingers crossed and locked in hopes that the penultimate track “Something About You” would round things out and be a gazey, reworked Level 42 cover. Dreamy, yes, but also a lovely original .

Liverpool’s has a rich history when it comes to providing the perfect pop bands – from the 60s heyday to the likes of The Coral in more recent years, there’s always been something special going on in Merseyside. New BBC favourites five-piece Cavalry – a band who have supported British Sea Power, The Antlers and Steven Malkmus  There new track “An Understanding” (released 31st May) certainly hints they’re on the right track. An electronica-laced opening with floaty vocals and dreamy guitar lines as the song builds into more anthemic territory the vocal interplay and big-sounding chorus have a touch of Dry the River’s penchant for memorable and passionate hooks. Although they’re softer to begin with, there’s a delicious rasp in Alan Croft’s lead vocals that blends perfectly with a sound that is ready-made for festivals.

A band you should watch out for, Cavalry will soon be on the march towards success

The Balcony Stars ‘She’s Going Down’
release from the Vinyl only label Eighties Vinyl Records.
A Limited Edition [100] Heavyweight Black 7″ Double A-Sided single, The Balcony Stars from Liverpool are definite shakers worthy of a peek. They describe themselves as psych-pop, a description I’d expand to include head-shaking garage.
