The Wirral-based garage rock trio of Lia Metcalfe (lead guitar) George Favager (bass) and Chrissy Moore (drums) formed in 2016 and gained an influential fan in the form of The Coral’s James Skelly, who produced their debut single Hormone. The band have supported Miles Kane on his tour earlier this year and they will be special guests of the Psychedelic Porn Crumpets in February 2019. Hear their single Hormone here.
Cloaked in mystery – no music and no social media, until now – the buzz whirling around the Wirral’s psych-rock groovers The Mysterines, heightened by a recent support tour with Miles Kane, has reached fever pitch with the release of outstanding debut single ‘Hormone’, already racking up unheard of plays for a brand new band on Spotify. Liverpool, are breeding ground of uniquely special bands, it appears has done it again. Ones to watch
The SHARDS – ” Reflections “

Liverpool’s Shards deliver their sublime recent single ‘Reflections‘ its landscape of simmering textures is infused with heart-tugging vocals. Echoing with the themes of faded memory, regret and moving on, this is a gorgeously drawn first single that touches upon how all of our lives are affected by our pasts. The final portions glacial guitar riffs bare the hallmarks of the widescreen wistfulness of mid-period Ride or the Cure but retain a personality that makes these comparisons a bit moot, as they possess a wealth of personality and promise. ‘Reflections’ achingly draws on universal themes and brushes them into such a shimmering picture, it’s an impressive and affecting first taste.

Featuring Hooton Tennis Club members James Madden and Ryan Murphy, art-rock quartet Seatbelts released their debut four-track EP, Songs For Vonnegut, this summer. Their sharp and spunky mix of art rock, garage rock and post-punk recalls the sound of Parquet Courts and Bodega.

The NIGHT CAFE – ” Bunkbed ” EP

Liverpool’s The Night Café dropped their sophomore EP Bunkbed earlier this year, following the same path the band has paved before with slow-cruising, guitar-dominated tracks. The final track on the EP, “Forget It All,” makes an abrupt entrance after the other previously unheard song, “I’m Fine.” Rather than fading in at the end of “I’m Fine,” “Forget It All” crashes in with the drum kit at the outset, sounding more like a delayed final cheer for the prior track, rather than a beginning tone. A false start, the instrument levels diminish and are interlaced with indistinguishable words pulled out of a staticky phone call. Then the song takes its real starting leap as the same beginning bang kicks in, joined by a faster guitar.

The VRYLL SOCIETY – ” Andrei Rublev “

Liverpool psych-pop five-piece The Vryll Society have released a new single, “Andrei Rublev.”
The band are currently working on their debut album, and have released a series of singles and an EP titled Pangea through famed Liverpool indie label Deltasonic Records (The Coral, The Zutons, White Room). The band recently supported The Kooks, Blossoms and The Coral in the U.K., and they also made an appearance at last year’s SXSW festival in Austin.
Their stunningly beautiful new song, “Andrei Rublev” is as mellowing as it is hypnotic, with frontman Mike Ellis’ calming lead vocals, their kraut-rock rhythm section, lush synth soundscapes and intricate psych guitar lines. The song’s raw power sneaks up on listeners with its trotting bass line and shimmering Procol Harum-esque keyboards before it erupts with euphoric sonic textures and biting guitar solos.
The Vryll Society’s new track’s title refers to a 1966 Soviet historical drama of the same name, directed by Andrei Tarkovsky. The band is due to play Brighton’s Great Escape Festival in May and Liverpool International Music Festival in July.

Stealing Sheep Suffragette Tribute
Presented in partnership with Edge Hill University and Brighter Sound.
In response to the centenary of suffrage, Stealing Sheep are celebrating women with a performance inspired by the suffragette movement. co-commissioned by Sound City Innovation partner Edge Hill University and Manchester-based creative music charity Brighter Sound, ‘Stealing Sheep’s Suffragette Tribute’ will bring together female drummers and percussionists from the Liverpool area with design, AV and production students to create a marching band and procession featuring brand new music – all inspired by women, equality and empowerment.
The performance will be the culmination of a five-day artistic residency led by Stealing Sheep. The residency is part of Both Sides Now, an initiative led by Brighter Sound to support, inspire and showcase female artists based in the North of England.
Edge Hill University have co-commissioned the piece as part of its ‘Wonder Women’ year of celebration of women’s suffrage, and empowered its students to be involved through its innovative Student Opportunity programme.
QUEEN ZEE & THE SASSTONES – ” Idle Crown “

Liverpool DIY punk outfit blur the lines between everything, from sexuality and gender to global politics. On tour with Marmozets in February. Two months ago, it would have been easy to perceive the Liverpool group as light-hearted and charmingly crass; shooting misandrist fuzz punk songs from the hip in the name of radical feminist solidarity. Now, it’s evident that Queen Zee and the Sasstones has always been a platform to express dysphoria and confusion. A coping mechanism. “I created the Zee character in order to live how I needed to live”, Zapata-Jones explains, “I think I grew into it.”
That lovable goofiness that the band initially radiated doesn’t exist by accident, though. In fact, ‘Queen Zee and the Sasstones’ in its earliest form was purely a name on a gig poster, there was no intention for anybody to play under that name. Eventually, with five days to go until the show, Zee and Em Dee, a long time collaborator of theirs, decided that they’d bring the band to life and play the show; their set consisted solely of a chaotic cover of The Prodigy’s ‘Firestarter’.

ECHO and the BUNNYMEN – ” The Stars, The Oceans & the Moon “

Liverpool’s post-punk legends Echo and The Bunnymen have announced their next record—their first since 2014’s Meteorites. The brand new album, The Stars, The Oceans & The Moon’ will be released in May of 2018 and will feature Bunnymen classics transformed and reinterpreted with co producer Andy Wright into “new songs with strings and things attached”
This is not too unusual given the Bunnymen’s liberal use of strings on classics such as “The Cutter”, “Silver”, and their the band’s use of a live string section during concerts of recent years. Lead by the Ian McCulloch and Will Sergeant, and co-produced by Andy Wright, there is no final track listing for The Stars, The Oceans & The Moon as yet, but we are promised that they will revisit “some of their greatest songs” and that we can expect a couple of brand new tracks. McCulloch’s take on this project is as follows: “I’m not doing this for anyone else. I’m doing it as it’s important to me to make the songs better. I have to do it.”
Along with the announcement of the new album are some very special UK tour dates that culminating at London’s Royal Albert Hall on June 1st.
The record will be available in signed and unsigned CDs, Double LPs, Double Picture Discs, and cassettes.
