Last month, The Tallest Man on Earth’s Kristian Matsson announced When the Bird Sees the Solid Ground, a multimedia project to be comprised of five new audio/visual components. Already, the Swedish troubadour has unveiled the first installment, the soothing song and clip for “An Ocean”.

“Somewhere In The Mountains, Somewhere In New York” is the second song from When The Bird Sees The Solid Ground, a new project from The Tallest Man on Earth. and finds Matsson reflecting on past tribulations and the importance of acceptance and adaptability. The folk singer-songwriter elaborated:

“For most of my career, I’ve written songs and saved them up in notebooks and voice memos. I’d record some of those songs, and then wait a half a year for them to be released. It all seemed very separate and compartmentalized and that’s always struck me as a bit unnatural. Even though they were abstract and maybe naive, they came from reacting to things happening around me in the moment.

Of course what those moments are change as we get older and so does how we process them. “Somewhere in the Mountains, Somewhere in New York” is about learning more and more about gratitude for positive things in life, big and small, and how to accept life’s changing nature, to snap out of fear of change and new challenges. But there are moments when being reasonable is not on the map; “I don’t want this to happen, please.” This is a song that is a snapshot of a moment like that and was written and recorded in just a couple of hours.”

Like its predecessor, both the track and visual are calming in nature — there’s just something about Matsson belting his heart out from the comfort of his own home that’s so cathartic and human.

“Bird Flew By” (Nick Drake) is the fifth episode of The Light in Demos, a video project produced, written, directed, recorded, shot and edited by The Tallest Man on Earth.

The Tallest Man on Earth launched a new video series called “The Light in Demos,” where he will debut new material every two weeks. In an introductory monologue that references Bill Callahan’s “To Be of Use,” he explains, “I’m going to be making these videos because I want to be a part of us inspiring each other to figure this out, to do cool things, to feel and practice love in our hearts. The Tallest Man on Earth has revealed that he will not be touring or releasing a new full-length album this year, he recently shared a collaborative EP with New York-based chamber ensemble yMusic. His last record was 2015’s Dark Bird Is Home.

“Same Ghost” is the second episode of a video project I started working on . I’ve decided to produce, write, direct, record, shoot and edit a series of videos by myself and release them here as I finish them. Each video features a demo of a new song or a cover that I record live on camera (except when friends join, their parts will likely be overdubbed).

While I love playing shows, and will get back out on the road eventually, I’ve found myself wanting to record what’s right in front of me, but not just through song, and not months or years after the fact. And while making music is endlessly inspiring, so is being quiet enough to stare at the way the light hits the barn.

I want to share the light and the sound, but not without a bit of risk – I’m not used to sharing demos – and not without a bit of uncertainty.  Subscribe to my channel to see them as they happen. I hope you enjoy.  K.M

The Tallest Man On Earth performs “Like The Wheel” live at Lightning 100. The Tallest Man On Earth, aka Swedish singer-songwriter Kristian Matsson, is quickly following his The Wild Hunt full-length with the wordier five-song Sometimes The Blues Is Just A Passing Bird. The guy gets compared to Dylan a lot, but the EP’s pretty, quiet third song “Like The Wheel” has something in its vocal line that reminds me of Magnetic Fields’ “Papa Was A Rodeo.” It’s a small, subtle thing — the drag of word or two at the end of certain lines — but it’s there and I can’t stop hearing it. Which is not a bad thing.

On May 12th, The Tallest Man on Earth, aka Kristian Matsson, will release his new album “Dark Bird Is Home“. among the first tracks to preview, Matsson has shared this the first taste of the album. Listen to “Sagres”

By the time “Dark Bird Is Home” lands, nearly three years will have flown by since the last release of The Tallest Man on Earth. In that time, while Swedish singer-songwriter Kristian Matsson spread his wings across the world to captivate large audiences with his one-person show, he was also laying down new songs wherever he could in various locations — sometimes studios, sometimes barns.

Our first glimpse of Dark Bird Is Home is “Sagres,” named for the remote cliff-side village in southern Portugal, a place of escape for the song’s heartbroken narrator. Despite its potential loneliness, “Sagres” finds Mattson with perhaps his largest production to date. Lush orchestration holds the airy melody aloft, as violin, mandolin, acoustic and electric guitar, castanet punctuated percussion and haunting backing vocals join in the soul-searching quest. He also just announced an extensive tour—find the dates below. This is Matsson’s first time touring with a full band.
