Nervous Dater are from Brooklyn New York  they could be the next premiere rock & roll outfit” so says one of the two-sentence-intro that accompanies the release of the aforementioned quartet’s forthcoming new record on Counter Intuitive Records, reading like something of a throwaway line, Thankfully, however, one listen to the band’s new track Bad Spanish is enough to dissipate any sense of cynicism, leading instead to a wholehearted embrace of such a sentiment.

For “Bad Spanish” slays. From the gnarly intro of crashing drums and guitar to the more structurally refined glow of the verses, all leading to frenetic moments of release that pertinently shape their beast of a song. “It’s fine, I said, I’ll bash my fucking head through the wall so I don’t have to call you before I go to bed,” Rachel Lightner bellows with all the gutsy and glorious weight of someone who needs such words dispelled from said head and out in to the world as soon, as loud, as clear as possible. Likened to bands such as Martha and Lemuria, Nervous Dater certainly make good on such lofty comparisons here, “Bad Spanish” further ramping up the excitement levels ahead of the full record release at the end of this month.

In Rachel Lightner, Nervous Dater boast one of the finest emerging lyricists in indie rock, one whose every neurotic couplet could be a self-contained story. Consider the chorus from “Bad Spanish,” the anthemic opener from debut album Don’t Be A Stranger: “It’s hard to ask for help if you don’t really want it/ Passed out on the train in your own vomit.” Or the many layers in this line on “Fun Dumpster,” the subsequent track: “I wore a dress for you/ ‘Cause you’re nicer when I do.” Or the breathlessly vulgar “Stockton Syndrome” climax: “Jackie’s got the drugs, and holy fuck he’s gonna take ‘em!” Lightner deploys these turns of phrase with a wide-eyed gusto that amplifies Nervous Dater’s prevailing feeling of barreling ahead while barely keeping it together, elevating their tremendous guitar-powered songwriting to ridiculous heights. Take the album title’s advice and get to know this band now.

As of 2016, The Moondoggies as a band will have existed for a full decade. To commemorate, Hardly Art Records will issue “Don’t Be A Stranger” on vinyl for the very first time. In addition to the original album, five previously unreleased bonus tracks have been tacked onto the release, all recorded during the same Don’t Be A Stranger sessions with producer Erik Blood in Seattle.

The Moondoggies are pleased to re-present this album and its new-old songs to you, dear listener, in lieu of new material that has been brewing since 2013.
