INHEAVEN by Steve Gullick

Unlike the political snark of some groups, or the activist message of others, INHEAVEN creates music out of a love of, well, just music.  “All those bands you grew up loving, especially those that changed your life ,owning that t-shirt and buying that record, looking at fanzines – you kind of owe it to them to carry it on. You want to do what all your favourite icons did,” explains singer and guitarist James Taylor. “Nirvana were a massive influence for me growing up, and the Clash for their ideology. Sonic Youth, the Cure…”Lyrically they just go with what comes naturally, rather than trying to be topical or on some sort of message. “I just write how I feel really,” says Taylor.

Chloe Little, on bass and vocals, laughs: “I’ve tried to be clever before and ‘say something’ with lyrics, but it just came our awful. We’re better just going with how we feel.”

With a sound echoing some of the ’90s shoegaze and grunge they explored in their teens, INHEAVEN understand that semi-obsessive streak that fans experience. “Bands are so emotional,” says Little. “I used to grab hold of everything I could and just cling onto it, pour over it.”

Having released just four songs into the world, their own fans are already responding with excitement

INHEAVEN are back with a scorcher in the form of “Vultures”

Their latest single is all over-driven guitars and impassioned vocals, with ’70s punk riffs and cantering drums. Simple, catchy melodies soar over the top of the rough and ready instrumentals, drawing attention to the candid lyrics: “It tastes like freedom but it feels like death,” croons Chloe Little over explosive guitars and a thumping bass line.

This follows the South London band’s release of the fiery “Treats” last year, and comes with an accompanying political video. Shots of burning money and flags are paired the blistering track, cementing the songs lyrics.

“Vultures” comes from the band Inheaven and their upcoming debut album, which they’re set to preview at The Great Escape in Brighton next month. They’ve also filled their summer with other festival appearances, so you’ll be able to catch them at Truck and Reading & Leeds, amongst others.

INHEAVEN – ” Treats “

In a interview last year, Inheaven spoke about their mission statement in frank detail. “We felt frustrated that there wasn’t a band we could grab on to. Let’s make that band up – the one we’re waiting for, the one we want.” Since then, they’ve gone several steps further in mimicking the look, sound and purpose of a previously-imaginary band they once dreamt up. At its best, new single ‘Treats’ could be a fictional repurposing of Inheavens rock heroes, nodding to Pixies, Nirvana and The Smashing Pumpkins in a fuzz-emblazoned headrush. Instead, it’s the latest chapter in their increasingly exciting story, where pipe dreams are becoming a reality.

The song’s led by an enraged and enlivened Chloe Little, who spits about why “we’re suffocating,” how she doesn’t want the world “left like this”. Lyrics roll over each other like limbs tangled together, lamenting on climate change, fear and paranoia. Politically-minded but instantly universal, it’s the sound of Inheaven finding their spark after opening a new box of matches. ‘Treats’ is the most grandscoped and purpose-filled they’ve ever sounded before.

INHEAVEN bassist Chloe Little takes on lead vocals for the band’s new scuzzy, grunge pop track ‘Treats’, premiered by Annie Mac on her BBC Radio 1 show last week.

Fuzz-pop merchants INHEAVEN have lifted the lid on their euphoric new number “Drift”.

This blistering new cut arrives in the wake of album “All There Is” – earlier this month the band’s Chloe Little wrote us an in-depth behind-the-scenes guide about that single’s accompanying video. The characters written about in the guide return in the visuals for “Drift”.

“Drift” is a stonewashed piece of glory, full of mid-’90s nods and a warm nostalgia throughout. Joyful guitars and shimmering drums form a solid bedrock for INHEAVEN’s duelling harmonies – this is uplifting and wholly captivating. INHEAVEN are one of our Ones To Watch for 2016.
