Bruising only formed approximately a couple of years ago, after a chance coming together in a nightclub in the bands home city, Leeds. Singer Naomi Baguley spotted Ben Lewis wearing a Perfect Pussy t-shirt, and the rest as they say is history. Naomi may now be based out of Berlin, but the band managed to continue and at the back end of 2015 they released a new AA single, recorded as all Leeds acts tend to be these days, at Suburban Home Studio’s the home of Hookworms-frontman turned production genius, MJ.

That single, Emo Friends/Honey, was a wonderful slice of what people used to call college rock, fusing energetic buzz-saw guitars with Naomi’s beautifully sweet vocal. Its release coincided with a tour with Los Campesinos and a significant step up in the bands activities. Whilst no details of the band’s debut album have thus far emerged, it’s already looking like a fruitful year for the latest band off the Yorkshire music production line

Bruising will release new single I Don’t Mind on 2nd December via the ever-excellent Beech Coma label, backed by Rest In Peace Kurt Donald Cobain (1967-1994).

“I Don’t Mind,” the latest single from UK four-piece Bruising, takes solace in the idea of acting as a support system with a simple refrain: “I don’t mind/ I love you,” Naomi Baguley sings sweetly in the chorus. It’s a song for when that desire to care for someone and to be cared for is elemental: “Calling you today was harder than I thought/ All I had to say was something dumb like I really need you.” But that necessity isn’t dumb, and “I Don’t Mind” acts as a comforting reminder.

“‘I don’t mind” is a sweet phrase,” Baguley explains. “It’s supportive and comforting, not as passive as it seems. Whatever you are going through or whatever you need to be – I don’t mind.” That sentiment is wrapped up in warm guitars and a lilting hook, the same sort that was so appealing on the group’s debut “Emo Friends” / “Honey 7″ from last year. “I Don’t Mind” will be included on an upcoming 7″ vinyl.

Listen to the A-side below which showcases the best of the four piece’s pop sensibilities, but with hooks that are both blistering and bashful and some venomous guitars.

They’ll also be hitting the road to play live dates in November and December lets hope they make it to Nottingham.

Bruising return with their debut single ‘Emo Friends’, with a re-recording of early demo ‘Honey’ making up the AA single. Now split between Berlin and Leeds as Baguley begins a year studying abroad, the band reconvened at Suburban Home Studios in Leeds to record the single with Hookworms’ MJ.

‘Emo Friends’ deals with the pains of helplessly watching both your own and your friends’ lives falling apart, and all that you can do to combat it is to have fun with them. Infectious guitar melodies contrast with Baguley’s softly layered cries of “I want to feel okay” before the song climaxes, in Lewis’ tongue-firmly-in-cheek words, “like the big smoocher hit at the end of an American teen movie circa 1999”. ‘Honey’, on the other hand, is a re-recording of the first song the duo wrote together, transformed from bedroom demo to straight up pop-punk hit. Baguley and Lewis try and out-do each other throughout, with floating vocals and ever-more venomous guitar lines thrown back and forth.

‘Emo Friends’ / ‘Honey’ is released 20th November on 7” vinyl and digitally via Beech Coma. Pre-order the single and/or sign up to the Beech Coma Singles Club here – beechcoma.bandcamp.com/album/emo-fri…-honey-single
