Bears Den, live in concert

Bear’s Den are London trio Andrew Davie, Joey Haynes, and Kevin Jones. The music they make is wholesome, warm, and engaging, and takes its influence from the likes of “Being There”-era Wilco, Ryan Adams, and a wealth of both folk and alt-country reference points.

The ethos of DIY is at the heart of everything Bear’s Den have done since their inception. Charging around the UK in a van playing to any venue that would have them, picking up support tours with the likes of Of Monsters and Men, Smoke Fairies, and Matt Corby, and concluding 2012 with a support slot for Mumford & Sons at London’s O2 Arena, Bear’s Den took time out and relocated to a cottage in Wales to record their debut EP, sold only at shows last year, and went on to record this Agape EP in Norfolk with Kristoffer Harris.

The latest track to be taken from the acclaimed album Islands, “Think Of England” captures a band at the turning point of their career.

Bear’s Den are about to ember on a huge UK and European tour. See the full tour dates below. Bear’s Den released their first single, “Elysium” last July on Communion Records/Caroline. Their strongest song to date, Elysium is an elegiac paean to the redemptive power of friendship and the song that marks the point Bear’s Den go from best kept secret to your new favourite band. absolutely stunning Live band.

Bear’s Den perform ‘Elysium’ for The Crypt Sessions

London based trio, Bear’s Den joined us recently for a hauntingly powerful performance of their single, Elysium. It’s an elegiac paean to the redemptive power of friendship and the song that marked the point Bear’s Den, for many, went from best kept secret to new favourite band.
Bear’s Den are, Andrew Davie (guitar, vocals), Joey Haynes (guitar) and Kev Jones (drums, bass). Inspired by Maurice Sendak’s 1963 children’s classic ‘Where the Wild Things Are’, Bear’s Den create music which -whisper it- dares to be both literate and profound while, crucially, remaining universally accessible. Since forming in 2012, the trio have built a fervent fanbase through their live shows and a dedicated DIY aesthetic that originally saw them self-fund tours and sell hand printed CDs direct to fans at gigs. 2014 has been quite the year for them; having played alongside the likes of Mumford and Sons and Daughter and not to mention sold out shows aplenty in their own right across the U.K. and U.S. Their critically acclaimed debut album, “Islands” was released earlier this year and recorded with long-term producer Ian Grimble at Church Studios. It’s lyrically both restrained yet richly descriptive, the product of Davie’s novelistic approach to songwriting.
‘Elysium’ is taken from the debut album, ‘Islands’ which is out now on Communion Records. And the band will be touring the UK and Europe early next year, culminating in a massive headline show at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire on 3rd March. With a 2015 tour announced and a brand new video of “Above The Clouds Of Pompeii”

Communion band Bears Den, and the song ‘Elysium’ was one of those tracks that became very personal to me very quickly. It made me think about my younger brothers and their transition from kids to adulthood — how they are carving out their individuality and quickly leaving youth, innocence, and wide eyes behind. “Brother don’t grow up…. /Just hope that age does not erase all that you’ve seen/Don’t let bitterness become you/Your only hopes are within you.” With the video, I wanted to capture elements of that transitional experience in my brother, Turner’s, life. I wanted to film him and his real friends doing actual things that they normally do. I wanted to document the actions and emotions of people at this age — the highs, the lows, the noteworthy and the mundane. I wanted to get inside what it feels like to be a teenager today. On a personal level, I wanted to freeze the last remnants of youth still left in my brother — to record him in this tender, fleeting age of early college years.

BEARS DEN put on a fantastic sets of songs at the Bodega Social in Nottingham previously, playing to a sell out crowd they played most of the songs covering the three EP’s and a few new songs, with the drummer playing various guitars drums keyboards and help from Markus an interim band member the vocals are sublime at all times Which brings us to their cover of Drake’s “Hold On, We’re Going Home”… But “Hold On, We’re Going Home” is so un-Drake-ish, that it makes perfect sense that Bear’s Den covering the song. Drake should take notes.

Bear’s Den… but I so so wish they were coming to Nottingham on their current tour. Their last EP, ‘Without/Within’, which was released by Communion Records, is a momentous collection of songs, seemingly written for the chronically heart-broken.

‘Without/Within’ starts off with ‘Sahara Pt. I & II’, a split track boasting a soft, swelling melody which enchants. Andrew Davie’s soft vocals builds slowly, and melds perfectly to a rousing chorus, the instrumentals grow into a catchy, deep melody that resonates right to your chest. As always, the lyrics are beautifully written, and meaningful.
