On their last album, 2012′s beautiful “Nootropics”, the Baltimore band Lower Dens explored some new middle ground between motorik krautrock pulse and headspun dream-pop drift. This spring, the band will follow that one up with “Escape From Evil”, their third album. And “To Die In L.A.,” the first single from the LP, sure seems to indicate that they’re taking another leap into the unknown. “To Die In L.A.” is, more or less, a synth-rock song, and there’s plenty of New Order in its DNA. But the band still has its own particular kind of dreamy drift, especially thanks to frontwoman Jana Hunter’s dark authority. Hunter produced the album, while indie rock producer-to-the-stars Chris Coady mixed it. Meanwhile, studio-pop auteur Ariel Rechtshaid contributed “production elements,” as did Lower Dens band member Walker Teret.

Wye Oak, Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack have spent most of their lives in Baltimore, Maryland. But after two years of constant touring with Civilian, their highly lauded 2011 album, they landed on opposite sides of the country with an unforeseeable future ahead. Despite this newfound uncertainty, the two bandmates embraced their physical distance, passing ideas back and forth, allowing new work to evolve in their respective solitudes. Shriek is Wye Oaks fourth full-length and the culmination of their intent to express the emotional and intuitive self by acting out animalistic exclamations through cathartic release.
Newly inspired by playing bass, Jenn took up songwriting in a setting where the guitar did not dictate harmonic boundaries or require a call-and-response relationship with her voice, a hallmark of previous Wye Oak records. With her phrasing freed, now it is often Andy who interacts with Jenn’s vocals, playing syncopated and meditative keyboard parts, and the duo’s collaborative arrangements provide a backdrop in which both the arcs of melodies and the new rhythmic elements flourish.

roadrunner

Baltimore noise pop foursome Roomrunner delivered yet another slab of crusty pop with Separate. It contains Roomrunner’s signature guitar fuzz and jarring drums, but it’s obvious Denny Bowen and company amped up the pop and decided to showcase their more melodically-charged side. Bowen’s voice is more exposed and forthright compared to past releases where it was buried beneath noise, but it’s a change for the better.
