Alyeska at the Hi Hat in 2016 (Photo by Zane Roessell)Alyeska the L.A. indie trio fronted by Montana native Alaska Reid, have been cultivating their cherub rock for a couple of years, taking a big step in 2016 to travel east to record with producer John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr., the Whigs, Kurt Vile, Sonic Youth, the Thermals, among others). And while a couple of Alyeska’s previous singles possess some arresting, beyond-her-years moments, the latest, “Tilt-A-Whirl,” is a straightforward, sweetly innocent tune drawn from her small-town upbringing and favorite carnival ride. The song will appear on Aleska’s EP “Crush,” due March 3rd, Reid said where the song premiered, that it is “an ode to the small county fair in my town. My friends and I would look forward to going every year, we’d see boys we had crushes on, and scream about the creepy carnies or the way your feet turned black with dirt in your yellow flip flops. … The dirt in the midway was pocked with pools of vomit and discarded glow sticks and the carnies would spray you with giant squirt guns, trying to lure you into playing their game. … It was sort of a running joke, that it was your ‘coming of age’ if you got squirted in the chest by the carnies. I just wanted to convey the sparkle and the excitement of when I was young against the neon glow of the county fair as well as the grit and the darkness lurking around the edges.”

Alyeska are a Los Angeles-based trio, led by front-woman Alaska Reid. Citing influences as wide-reaching as Nick Drake, Captain Beefheart and Dinosaur Jr., Alyeska’s sound blends twitchy electric guitars with Alaska’s powerhouse vocal chords, they could be just the band for people waiting to hear something new from Forth Wanderers.

Whilst details of their upcoming album are yet to be fleshed out, recent single, Lose My Place, was an exciting taster. The track lyrically dealt with social disconnection and Alasaka’s own struggles to find a place to call home, either in her native Montana or her adopted home of Los Angeles. Musically it is energetic and complex, shifting rapidly from one great melodic idea to another – fuzzy enough for the indie-kids, melodic enough for the pop-kids, Alyeska are on the verge of something wonderful.

Alyeska is both the archaic spelling of Alaska and the name LA-based Montana native Alaska Reid chose for her band. The quartet make retro-leaning, guitar-powered alternative rock fronted by one of the most unique and powerful female voices out there today.

Just this last year, Alyeska finished their debut LP with producer John Agnello at The Magic Shop in NYC, whose credits include Dinosaur Jr, Kurt Vile, Sonic Youth and Phosphorescent– all artists that inspire the band.

If you’re looking at the word Alyeska and thinking that sounds like Alaska, you’re not far wrong for it is the archaic spelling of that big cold state near Russia. Alyeska is also the name that singer sonwriter and Montana native Alaska Reid chose for the band she formed after relocating her life to the bustling climes of Los Angeles.

The quartet make retro-leaning, guitar-powered alternative rock fronted by one of the most unique and powerful female voices out there today.

This week Alyeska, a three-piece with Alasaka augmented by Ben Spear and Enzo Scardapane, have shared their new single, Lose My Place. From an intro of rolling toms and mathsy guitars, Alaska’s vocal arrives, it’s a little jazzy, but also raw, easy and anxious, somewhere between Margaret Glaspy and Torres. The track ebbs and flows, from noisy and complex, to sweet poppy choruses and an immense outro that could be Rilo Kiley or Field Mouse. The track is taken from the band’s upcoming John Agnello produced album, which doesn’t have a release date or a title as yet, but we’re already marking down as one of 2017’s most anticipated releases.
