Erin Rae has announced a new album, “Lighten Up”, which was produced by Jonathan Wilson and features guest appearances by Kevin Morby, Hand Habits, and Ny Oh. It arrives February 4th via Thirty Tigers and the first single is a lovely dose of alt-country called “Modern Woman.”

Eric spoke about the track “Modern Woman” from the start is meant to be a little cheeky, coming from me, a white femme-presenting woman, but it just sort of spilled out one day in the kitchen during the pandemic. It’s been so incredibly powerful to witness the discussion and evolution of gender norms through my peers and friends, as well as the representation of all bodies breaking more and more into mainstream media. The song is basically a speech to a figurative person who is uncomfortable with the disintegration of a tired definition of what it means to be a woman. With the video, Joshua Shoemaker and I wanted to celebrate and represent our friends in the community who relate to the term “woman” in different capacities, and basically brag on the diverse community of small business owners Nashville holds, and the work they are all doing to push Nashville forward, often against its will, into this new world of inclusivity.

Elaborating on the new album via press release, Erin said, “My last record was a lot of self-assessment and criticism, and trying to kick old habits and ways of relating and not relating to people. This one is about blossoming, opening up, and living a little more in the present moment. Fully experiencing what it is to be human.”

This record feels like a lifetime in the making for me, and yet it has come together so quickly during the blur of these last couple years. After the deep dive of introspection that was “Putting On Airs”, I feel so thankful and ready to move into this new chapter of softness and love towards myself, into deeper loving connection with others, out of my head (a little bit, haha) and into life. I hope when you listen you are able to feel and allow it all, whatever “it” is. There’s a little bit of everything, and most important to me this time, some hope and Fun.

The new song comes with a video that features cameos by Brittany Howard, Kelsey Waldon, and Michaela Anne.

I am so excited to share with you that my new album, “Lighten Up”, produced by Jonathan Wilson, will arrive February 4th, 2022 via the special folks at Thirty Tigers

More than 50(!) years after Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s first record together, “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere”, came out, the musician and band again join forces for “Barn“, whose title doubles as the recording site: a restored 19th-century barn located deep in the Rockies. And as lead single “The Song Of The Seasons” immediately establishes, the rolling Americana and signature tenor are all there, once more backed by his able bandmates. An accompanying film will provide a more in-depth look, but, as always with Young, the music is the draw.

Neil Young and Crazy Horse are to release a new album, “Barn”, on December 10th. The songwriter announced the project through his Neil Young Archives site, issuing the track “Song of the Seasons” as a digital stream for subscribers. “Lookin’ through a wavy glass window / In this old place by the lake,” he sings on the cut. “In the colours of the falling leaves / I see that nature makes no mistake.”

Young writes that the song, the “oldest” on “Barn”, was “written in Canada about a year ago.” He adds, “There was a recording of the song done in my hometown that is the earliest. This is the first one with Crazy Horse! It starts the album.”

“Song of the Seasons” â€” produced by Young and Niko Bolas features the front man on vocals, guitar and harmonica; Nils Lofgren on accordion and vocals; Billy Talbot on bass and vocals; and Ralph Molina on drums and vocals. Young previewed the album’s recording sessions back in June, writing on the NYA that “we are so happy to be back in the barn, a barn built to replicate the 1850s barn that had collapsed in exactly the same place, high in the mountains of Colorado!”

In addition to “Barn” which follows 2019’s “Colorado” the former Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young member has been active recently with archival projects, releasing shelved studio material (1975’s “Homegrown“) and live records (1971’s “Young Shakespeare“, 1990’s “Way Down in the Rust Bucket”.) He’s also previewed a massive amount of other music, including 1982’s “Johnny’s Island” (previously titled “Island in the Sun“), the album that “Trans” replaced in his catalogue

Neil Young and Crazy Horse, ‘Barn’ Track Listing
1. “Song Of The Seasons”
2. “Heading West”
3. “Change Ain’t Never Gonna”
4. “Canerican”
5. “Shape Of You”
6. “They Might Be Lost”
7. “Human Race”
8. “Tumblin’ Thru The Years”
9. “Welcome Back”
10. “Don’t Forget Love”

The album is available on CD, vinyl and similar to previous Neil Young releases there’s a lift-off lid box set (a “numbered first pressing”) which brings together CD, vinyl and blu-ray. The blu-ray is a film of the band performing the songs live, directed by Daryl Hannah (aka Mrs Neil Young).

All the formats are available via Young’s â€˜Greedy Hand’ shop, which also offers the blu-ray as a standalone product.

SUNFLOWER BEAN – “Baby Don’t Cry”

Sunflower Bean shared their first new music of the year, “Baby Don’t Cry,” which was produced and mixed by Jacob Portrait of Unknown Mortal Orchestra. “So many things in our lives are disposable,” the band writes. “Content and news is consumed and discarded leaving us unfulfilled. ‘Baby Don’t Cry’ is about enjoying the real. The things right in front of us that give us meaning and how sometimes, even sad songs can give you that warm feeling of hope.

Mom+Pop Records sweethearts Sunflower Bean are riding a huge wave in their young career. In 2018, their sophomore record “Twentytwo in Blue” rose to the UK’s Top 40, and all three band members turned 22 years old. Sunflower Bean spent the following years touring with household names like Beck, Interpol, and label-mate Courtney Barnett, to name a few.

In 2021, they’re back with new music, starting with the single “Baby Don’t Cry.” The tune is a fun, catchy indie bop with edgy guitar and synths. It’s familiar-sounding, but still new and distinct — perfectly emblematic of trends that resonate with a Gen-Z audience, or even a little older. Disillusioned members of society of all ages will resonate with the meaning of “Baby Don’t Cry.” About the song, Sunflower Bean says, “So many things in our lives are disposable. Content and news is consumed and discarded leaving us unfulfilled. ‘Baby Don’t Cry’ is about enjoying the real. The things right in front of us that give us meaning and how sometimes, even sad songs can give you that warm feeling of hope.”

In addition to the new single, Sunflower Bean announced an upcoming tour with a stop at Mama Roux’s in Birmingham 6th April.

Los Angeles based incendiary rock band Kills Birds are sharing their new single “Cough Up Cherries,” the third offering from their upcoming, sophomore album “Married“, out via their new label home Royal Mountain Records and KRO Records on November 12th. The band have recently confirmed several tour dates with Foo Fighters and Sleigh Bells for 2021 and 2022 and have also been confirmed to perform as part of The Great Escape’s First Fifty, the first round of the freshest and most exciting talent across the globe.

The new album was recorded at Dave Grohl’s Studio 606 by invitation of the man himself, and produced by Yves Rothman. The newest single “Cough Up Cherries” arrives with an official video, directed by Brandon Somerhalder, that speaks directly to the forthcoming album, “Married”, as vocalist Nina Ljeti wears a wedding dress and veil. We see home movies being filmed, and a very domestic, isolated life — literally being put in a box (a TV screen) — juxtaposed with ferocious live performance scenes, where guitarist Jacob Loeb flawlessly pulls off the full-body guitar spin.

Vocalist Nina Ljeti explains “Cough Up Cherries” and says, “There are a lot of themes to Cherries, as it was written during the height of the pandemic in 2020. The song touches on feelings of loneliness, paranoia, and hopelessness that we all experienced. In addition, Cherries also addresses the identity crisis we all face in the digital age. What our performative personas are vs. who we really are when we’re left alone, and if in the midst of great injustice, we are actually able to hold our own selves accountable.”

Guitarist Jacob Loeb adds, “This song’s instrumentation reflects some of the layers of confusion and chaos that were felt by so many at the height of the pandemic. It’s music that we found at the apex of isolation and outrage. This song has a deeply ominous kick drum heartbeat that drives through the unnervingly twisted and interwoven guitar and bass parts that crescendo to a chorus that feels like an authentic expression of our collective rage at that height of that chaotic time. Bosh Rothman, who drummed on the record, brought some serious fire to the drum fills that close out the song.”

“Cough Up Cherries” from Kills Birds, available now on Royal Mountain Records & KRO Records. “Married” is out November 12th, 2021.

CHIME SCHOOL – ” It’s True “

Chime School are sharing their new upbeat & jangly “It’s True” single/video. Chime School is due on 11/5 via Slumberland Records.

Chime School is the project of San Francisco musician Andy Pastalaniec. Endlessly charmed by 80s indie and its 60s forbearers (and any record with a 12-string guitar), Andy cut his teeth as a drummer with SLR labelmates Odd Hope in their early group Pink Films; later with shoegazers Cruel Summer, and currently with indie-pop outfit Seablite. But it wasn’t until he was gifted a cassette 4-track portastudio “almost as a dare,” that he came out from behind the kit to write and record his own material.

The aptly named Chime School pays homage to the formative jangle of The Byrds by way of early Primal Scream and The Springfields; the production and pop sensibility of the Biff Bang Pow and The Razorcuts; and the spirit of great singles labels like Creation, Postcard and Sarah.

San Francisco’s Chime School descendents of their hometown’s janglepop tradition. “Wait Your Turn” is the sparkling new single from their upcoming self titled debut that will be out November 5th via Slumberland Records.

From the dreamy album opener “Wait Your Turn” to the driving jangle of singles “Taking Time To Tell You” and “It’s True” we can see that we’re in the presence of a very talented writer indeed, someone with a lifetime’s worth of pop fandom just waiting to burst out in song.

Taken from Chime School’s self-titled debut album, out November 5th on Slumberland Records.

Minus the Bear will release the “Farewell” live LP, later this month on October 29th via Suicide Squeeze Records. The album features previously unreleased live versions of fan favourites and deep cuts from throughout the band’s 17 year history, recorded at various dates along their 2018 farewell tour. The band have already shared one track from “Farewell“, a recording of “Absinthe Party at the Fly Honey Warehouse” that Brooklyn Vegan writes “reminds you that Minus The Bear remained a powerful live band until the very end.” In anticipation of the upcoming release date, today they’re sharing a recording of “Lemurs, Man, Lemurs” from that aforementioned final run. The recording is one of 26 songs found on “Farewell”, which will be available as a 3xLP and on digital formats.

“Lemurs” was the first song we ever worked on—I remember writing those riffs in one of my shitty apartments on Capitol Hill in Seattle. Impossible to imagine it was the start of an amazing 18 year journey.” – David Knudson

When Minus the Bear played their debut show in Seattle back in September 2001, there was an immediate hype surrounding the band. The individual members had already established themselves on a national level with earlier music projects, and their debut EP This Is What I Know About Being Gigantic was already available at the merch table. Within the first few measures of their distinctive brand of nimble and dexterous indie rock, it was obvious to the audience that the insider buzz was well deserved. Twenty years later, we’re treated to “Farewell”—a 3xLP live album spanning their seventeen-year run and a sonic goodbye note to their fervent fanbase. Listening to “Farewell”, the listener is reminded of Minus the Bear’s ability to deliver their cerebral instrumentation, pensive song-writing, and serious musicianship with an infectious energy and celebratory spirit. It’s no wonder they ascended to such heights.

But all things must pass. And so it was that Minus the Bear said farewell to their audience over the course of a US tour in the fall of 2018. They had always been a band that thrived in the live setting, so it only made sense to document those final performances for posterity. Recorded across multiple shows in a variety of cities, “Farewell” serves as both an approximation of the average night’s setlist on that final tour (the song selection changing slightly from night to night) and a chronicle of the band’s sonic evolution. Bolstered by the mix of Matt Bayles and master job by Ed Brooks at Resonant Mastering, the album sounds like a fully immersive live experience.

Farewell opens with a highly energized performance of Menos el Oso’s crucial track “Drilling.” Part of the beauty of watching Minus the Bear was hearing their songs unfold on stage and realizing how little studio magic was actually involved in their albums. All the electric wizardry by guitarists David Knudson and Jake Snider, technicolor synth work by Alex Rose, and rhythmic interplay between drummer Joshua Sparks and bassist Cory Murchy happens in real time, and hearing the old favourites here in all their road-tested glory is an invigorating reminder of the band’s razor sharp performances and forward-thinking creativity. Minus the Bear were never a band to rest on their laurels, and Farewell immediately moves onto late career classics like the melancholic banger “Last Kiss.” The whole discography is covered—from first EP cuts like “Lemurs, Man, Lemurs” and “Hey, Wanna Throw Up?” to the title track of their final release “Fair Enough”. And in between we hear the roar of the crowd, the heartfelt thanks and bittersweet ruminations on the passing of the years by Snider, and the occasional dad joke by Rose.

Farewell covers a lot of ground across the span of its 26 songs and two-hour run time. Yet every moment is a reminder of why Minus the Bear were such an experiential live band.

Suicide Squeeze Records is proud to offer Farewell to the world on October 29th, 2021 as a 3xLP and on digital formats. The initial pressing was limited to 3,000 copies (1,900 on custom opaque gray vinyl – retail exclusive, 600 on custom opaque gold vinyl (SOLD OUT) – artist exclusive, 500 on custom opaque red vinyl (SOLD OUT) – label exclusive). Due to demand, a repressing of the Farewell Live LP in additional coloured variants is now available (1,000 on coke bottle green vinyl -artist exclusive, and 1,000 on white opaque vinyl

Land of Talk has announced their new EP, “Calming Night Partner”, which will be released on November 12th, 2021. They’ve also shared the alternately urgent and atmospheric first single, “Moment Feed,” alongside its video—directed by AITSO. “During the making of this song I kept envisioning a time when we’d Finally get to play live shows again: A room full of bodies swaying, heads bopping, eyes smiling. All of us together. Together again,” explains bandleader Lizzie Powell. “I believe this song was made to warm up the room in all senses.”

Land of Talk recorded “Calming Night Partner” during the pandemic and on the heels of 2020’s acclaimed Indistinct Conversations, which saw Powell embracing a newfound sense of self as a non-binary femme, and finding their voice in confronting both a painful past and oppressive constructs.

The new EP exists in a similarly therapeutic space, while further expanding Land of Talk’s lush and adventurous sound. Its songs juxtapose at times dark, difficult realities with light, cascading melodies.

Do nothing eps

Vinyl only compilation of the first two EPs “Zero Dollar Bill” and “Glueland” on coloured vinyl and housed in a gatefold sleeve. The band have quickly earned a reputation as an incendiary live act while out on tour across 2019 – their most recent run of touring culminated in their biggest show to date at Nottingham’s Rescue Rooms. Equal parts Roxy-esque art rock, Ze/Celluloid Records no wave and intoxicating pop in the lineage of LCD Soundsystem and Talking Heads, Do Nothing songs are characterized by the acerbic lyricism of vocalist Bailey where every song feels like its own self-contained psychodrama.

“Zero Dollar Bill” was “Do Nothing” debut EP. Lead track is LeBron James, a sardonic swing at scammers and con men.

The 5 Track EP Glueland was released on their own label Exact Truth. The band, comprised of childhood friends vocalist Chris Bailey, guitarist Kasper Sandstrom, bassist Charles Howarth and Andrew Harrison on drums, have had a breakout 2020, with all three singles from debut EP Zero Dollar Bill – ‘Contraband’, ‘Fits’ and ‘LeBron James’ – landing on the BBC Radio 6 Music playlist. This EP was produced by Ali Chant at Toybox Studios in Bristol and mixed by Tom Rees, lead vocalist and guitarist of Cardiff band Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard.

In the Autumn of 2020, Dead Meadow convened at Camp Mozumdar, hidden away in the mountains above Los Angeles, to record their Levitation Session at The Pillars of God. The film captures a full performance from the legendary trio, with all original members — Steve Kille (bass), Mark Laughlin (drums) and Jason Simon (guitar/vocals). The three rip through tracks across their discography in front of the monumental structure, part of a sprawling complex built by A.K. Mozumdar and his followers in the mid 20th century in the mountains of Crestline, California as a place of worship for people of all faiths.

“On moonlight nights, when the sky lowers itself with its myriad of stars and when the wooded hillside and desert play with lights and shadows, one’s heart is filled with gratitude just to be alive.” – A.K. Mozdumar “When Steve showed me the all-but-forgotten Pillars of God, tucked away down a mountainside dirt road, we both knew this was a place we needed to play. Dead Meadow has always been a retreat of sorts for us, a sanctuary of creativity and freedom. We learned the Pillars were built with similar ideas in mind, open for all as a place to turn towards an inner world. It seemed only fitting to break the longest period in our twenty year history without performing live at this nearly 100 year old monument. Our music echoed out into the night and travelled across the tree tops in the valley below. Come join us here, all are welcome.”

In October 2020 Dead Meadow recorded a live performance at the mystical ruins of Camp Mozumdar, the amphitheater Pillars of God.

The band’s Levitation Session gathers tracks from over 20 years of the band’s work, distilled into a potent 70 minute performance, featuring rare tracks and a handful that have never been released live before. Dead Meadow runs through classic live favourites like “Green Sky Green Lake”, “What Needs Must Be”, and “The Narrows” but then delves into more esoteric regions of their catalogue. “White Worm” occasionally finds its way into a set but is captured live for the first time here while “Jusiamere Farm” has not been played since shows in the early 2000s. Dead Meadow bring us a generous offering of psychedelic rock, imbued with the spirit that inspired The Pillars of God.

“Your mind is your inner empire. Whatever you vision yourself in your mental empire, the same you become.” – A.K. Mozdumar

Released March 5th, 2021

Setlist: 1. I Love You Too 2. Rains in the Desert 3. What Needs Must Be 4. Jusiamere Farm 5. Six To Let The Light Shine Thru… 6. Greensky Greenlake 7. The Light 8. Such Hawks Such Hounds 9. The White Worm 10. I’m Gone 11. The Narrows

Suki Waterhouse catalogs the most intimate, formative, and significant moments of her life through songs. You might recognize her name or her work as a singer, songwriter and  actress, but you’ll really get to know the multi-faceted artist through her music. Growing up in London, Suki gravitated towards music’s magnetic pull and always saw the medium as a way of expressing creativity and telling stories. Previous singles “Brutally”, “Good Looking” and “Valentine” drew comparisons to the Paisley Underground sound of Mazzy Star and to the 60s influenced girl group reimagining of bands like Stockholm’s The Concretes and Glasgow’s Camera Obscura.

Megan Jasper, CEO of Sub Pop said, “Suki’s songs are smart, radiant, and incredibly engaging, much like her personality. We knew the minute we heard them that they were important and needed to be out in the world. Sub Pop is over the moon to be working with her!”

“Moves” illuminates the nuances of her sound. With gentle guitar strumming throughout the verses and a rhythmic bass permeating the chorus, Waterhouse warns she might “put some goddamn moves on you” with beautiful, haunting vocals. “Moves” is a song that dreams about the impossibility of, one day, being struck by a person who changes the course of your life.

“Moves” is a song I first started writing one night on the couch, picking up the guitar and seeing what came out,” writes Suki. “It was a moment where I felt the urge to both sever a bond of connection with somebody and yet at the same time pursue and put my trust back in love.”

Suki Waterhouse has released a brand-new single, “Moves” which comes with a visually stunning video directed by Cameron McCool. The track is the first to be released off her forthcoming full-length album, due out in 2022 via Sub Pop Records. “Moves” is Executive Produced by Grammy-Nominated Producer & Songwriter Brad Cook (Bon Iver, War On Drugs, Snail Mail, Waxahatchee). “Moves” is accompanied by companion track “My Mind,” a song that shows off Suki’s beautiful, airy vocals.
