KIM CHURCHILL – ” Dawn Sounds “

Posted: October 28, 2022 in MUSIC

my new album is coming out January 13th 2023. It’s called ‘Dawn Sounds’. I’m so so happy with it. I’ve recently taken to getting up at about 4.45 AM and making a cup of tea and lighting some candles and writing my songs. They come straight out of dreams and seem to stem from a deeper place in my heart. Less mind in there you know. So we recorded ‘Dawn Sounds’ out the back of Byron over three days during sunrise.

I have a little taster from ‘Dawn Sounds’ for you. ‘Come Back Free’ comes out today! It’s a song about failure. How important it is for growth. How it represents an occasion in which you rose – regardless of the outcome. Rising to occasions is the real path of life. This is growth and the journey. ‘Come Back Free’ celebrates that moment, sometime’s a bit down the line, where you realise you’re ok and you’re stronger and you’re back baby! I shot the film clip with my dear friend Saskia Burmiester around the Hunter Valley

forthcoming album Dawn Sounds:

Good things come to those who wait, and the magnificent “Changes” is worth every one of the 2,628,000 minutes King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard invested in it. Soaked in the warm sonics of 70s r’n’b and guided by simple chord-changes that contain multitudes and rounding out another remarkable year for the group, their fifth album of 2022 is a luminous, soft-pop marvel. Come lose yourself in its slow-cooked brilliance.

We wanted to see how far we could take a single idea; a chord+key change from D major to F# major. What would it sound like if we oscillated between those two keys? Turns out, it sounded pretty good so we took the idea pretty far; we made a whole record.

It felt easy to be dissonant working within this format so we aimed for beautiful, fluid, purposeful, musical. This record is like one big song. It’s a song cycle.

Thanks to YOU for coming along on this WILD ride. It feels surreal to release this music into the world, but it feels good too.

I love you all, Stu xoxoxox

Only The Strong Survive is the new album from Bruce Springsteen, and his first new album since 2020’s Letter To You. The album is a collection of soul music gems, that celebrate the legendary songbooks of Gamble and Huff, Motown, Stax and many more.

“Only The Strong Survive” features vocals from Springsteen and instrumentation primarily from his long time producer Ron Aniello. The album also features guest vocals from Sam Moore, as well as contributions from The E Street Horns, full string arrangements by Rob Mathes and backing vocals from Soozie Tyrell, Lisa Lowell, Michelle Moore, Curtis King Jr., Fonzi Thornton and Dennis Collins.

The previous two tracks released from Springsteen’s “Only the Strong Survive” were “Do I Love You (Indeed I Do),”  and “Nightshift,”

Bruce Springsteen released a third song from his upcoming “Only the Strong Survive” soul covers album, posted along with the message, “Ready for another one? Don’t Play That Song out this Friday October 28th.

Co-written by Atlantic Records co-founder Ahmet Ertegun and Betty Nelson (Ben E. King’s wife), “Don’t Play That Song” — usually called “Don’t Play That Song (You Lied)” — was first recorded by King in 1962, and reached the Top 20. It was the first track of King’s Don’t Play That Song! album that year, which, more famously, included his all-time classic, “Stand by Me.”

Aretha Franklin had similar success when she recorded the song in 1970.

Watch the brand new video for Bruce’s cover of the Aretha Franklin classic “Don’t Play that Song”. (Aretha’s version was a cover of the 1962 original by Ben E. King)

JULIE DRISCOLL – ” 1969 “

Posted: October 27, 2022 in MUSIC

Conceived and recorded following Julie’s tenure with Brian Auger And The Trinity, with whom she had recorded two albums and commercial success with a version of Dylan and Rick Danko’s ‘This Wheel’s On Fire’.

Eager to break away from the heavy burden of being in the public spotlight, Julie Driscoll wrote a series of fine compositions and collaborated with her soon-to-be husband Keith Tippett on their arrangements.

The album sessions were produced by Giorgio Gomelsky and featured contributions from some of the finest musicians on the British Jazz and Rock scene, including guitarist Chris Spedding, Elton Dean, Nick Evans and Mark Charig (Soft Machine), Karl Jenkins and Jeff Clyne (Nucleus) and the members of Blossom Toes.

Featuring outstanding pieces such as ‘A New Awakening’, ‘Those That We Love’ and ‘Break Out’, ‘1969’ was an artistic triumph, but was destined to remain unreleased until 1971, due to the collapse of Giorgio Gomelsky’s Marmalade Records.

One of my favorites from Julie’s solo album “1969” (recorded in 1969, released in 1971). This slide show features photos of Julie from her early days with Long John Baldry in the mid-1960’s, with Brian Auger’s Trinity in the late ’60’s, and one dating from the early ’70s. I loved her work with Brian Auger, but this track is one of our favourite’s of the solo work she’s done. This track features Julie on acoustic guitar and her future husband Keith Tippett on piano.

This edition has been newly remastered and is a most welcome reissue of a true classic.

FEATURING MEMBERS OF BLOSSOM TOES, NUCLEUS AND SOFT MACHINE. WITH FULLY RESTORED ARTWORK AND ESSAY.

TVAM – ” High Art Lite “

Posted: October 27, 2022 in MUSIC

TVAM is the project of bedroom producer Joe Oxley and his debut ‘Psychic Data’ is already being seen as a cult classic in some quarters despite only being released in 2018. Now four long-seeming years later we get ‘High Art Lite’ – an album that is even brighter and bolder than the debut  – it’s all squelchy, dystopian basslines, vintage synth soundtrack vibes and haunting atmospherics.

TVAM returns aboard a Starline tourbus, peeping through the privets and leering over the fences of the rich and famous with a suspicious, cynical eye. “High Art Lite” is his first long-player for Invada Records. TVAM self-released his much-acclaimed debut “Psychic Data” in the autumn of 2018, something of a cult-classic, the album joined the dots between Suicide’s deconstructed rock ’n’ roll, Boards of Canada’s irresistible nostalgia and My Bloody Valentine’s infinite noise.

Featuring 11 brand new tracks inc. ‘Double Lucifer’, ‘Piz Buin’ and ‘Semantics’, “High Art Lite” takes a different tilt to its predecessor by emphasising the immediate and the personal. The colours are blown-out and the brightness is cranked up. TVAM’s take on such things as role models, fictional movie character tropes, and fables of good and evil, are all tackled with the same suspicious cynicism but this time with an urgent belief in the human condition. A heady mix of Black Mirror’s modern fables, JG Ballard’s gated communities of sun-drenched wealth, and Mulholland Drive’s boulevard of broken daydreams, “High Art Lite” offers an all-inclusive package of redemption. Clocking in at just under 40 minutes – the pop music sweet spot – “High Art Lite” treads a beguiling line between blissful harmonies, crunching noise pop and childlike innocence .

The album is both visceral and melancholic, drifting wonderfully across dream pop, shoegaze and synth-pop without ever permanently calling one camp its home.

WAND – ” Spiders In The Rain “

Posted: October 27, 2022 in MUSIC

While fans await a new studio album to follow 2019’s ‘Laughing Matter’, Los Angeles psych-rock outfit Wand present a document of themselves in their greatest context – on the stage and in front of an audience. ‘Spiders In The Rain’ is a patchwork of live recordings from throughout their career, and in many ways the quintessential Wand album.

Since 2014, Wand have made five albums (and an EP) in the studio and a living playing on the road. Business / pleasure: the two sides of their (multiverticed, decagon) coin, flipping in the strobe light of ongoing self-actualization. And yet, by doing both at the same time – making a record of them playing live – they’ve now made their best one yet.

With 2020 hindsight (and magic mics), we spy Wand in their late “Plum/Laughing Matter” quintet style, rolling up the west coast and rolling out the magic carpet. These nights spent communing with the crowds and jamming toward infinity (fittingly) promise that we’ll meet again, on nights like these further down the Möbius strip. But you KNEW this!!!

Following the 2020 release of her first album ‘Land Of No Junction’, Irish musician Aoife Nessa Frances goes to Partisan Records for its successor. ‘Protector’, like much music and art created during the lockdown, is reflective and mature, acknowledging and embracing family and roots following the transcendence of youth, consisting of elegant, brooding reveries.

A mixture of folk, psych, chamber and pop, Aoife Nessa Frances’ sophomore ‘Protector’ floats along effortless and creates some really dreamy soundscapes – proper enchanting stuff!

The SNARLS – ” Burst “

Posted: October 27, 2022 in MUSIC

Snarls spent 2019 quietly blooming. Two songs landed this Columbus, OH four-piece on Stereogum’s Top 100 Songs and Best New Bands honour rolls. With that running start in mind, 2020 is when they’ll surely blossom into a band to watch. Debut LP “Burst” found the next charming coming-of-age story in shimmering character drama (2019 standout “Walk in the Woods”), woozy indie-pop (“Hair”), and blue-eyed existentialism (“Concrete”). Snarls’ song writing is as unfiltered and spectral as growing into one’s own should be, but it promises just as an enchanting listen for those outside looking in. It’s no wonder MTV tried to brand Snarls’ enchanting indie rock as promising “the best of emo and shoegaze” or that the band themselves sees themselves as the forebearers of “glitter emo alt rock.”

Snarls is fresh, frenzied, and worth fawning over. You’ll just have to find out on your own.

“Burst” is out now on CD/Digital via Take This To Heart Records

released March 6th, 2020

Snarls is Chlo White (Vocals, Guitar), Riley Hall (Bass, Vocals), Mick Martinez (Guitar), and Max Martinez (Drums).

All songs written and performed by snarls.
