The FRIGHTNRS – ” Nothing More To Say “

Tragedy looms over The Frightnrs‘ stunning debut. Soon after this quartet from Queens, New York began recording the album, their singer, Dan Klein received a fatal diagnosis: ALS. Less than two months before the album’s release in September, Klein died. However shattering his story, Klein left a significant legacy on ‘Nothing More To Say.’ It offers a highly informed riff on the mid-’60s Jamaican style known as rock-steady, a genre which drew heavily on American doo-wop and soul. The band’s beats mine a deep groove, while Klein sang with a strained poignancy, giving him a distinct cry. It’s a sound both urgent and fleeting. The lyrics too have double meanings, moving from love lorn odes to meditations on a life that’s been lost.
