Bleached

Finally, an album that suggests Los Angeles isn’t a perma-sunny Instagram stream of kale smoothies, Coachella outfits and crystal healing ceremonies. It, too, has disillusioned millennials who can’t make rent, date a decent other and catch a break. That’s the city that Bleached attempt to capture on their second album, though, disappointingly, their peroxide-pop garage-rock is hardly Broad City-goes-punk. Instead, there are familiar tropes about going to shows, being wasted and chasing boys, from Wasted on You (“getting high off the drug that I call you”) to the Weezerish Wednesday Night Melody (“drag the needle on the groove today and waste away”). Occasionally there are moments of wry greatness: grunge homage Desolate Town evokes LA’s surfeit of dead-eyed hipsters (“said you were in a band/why am I not surprised”), while Sour Candy sounds like it’s speeding down Sunset Strip in a Chevrolet. Their songs are both catchy and as casual as a shoulder shrug, but you just wish those worms had dug a little deeper.

Whenever I see the date 4/1/16, I immediately think “oh hey, that’s when the new Explosions In The Sky album is coming out.” I believe, however, that it’s time for me to amend that thought to also include an equal amount of excitement for Bleached’s new LP. Today their latest single, which may be among my favorite of the bunch so far.

Garage pop trio Bleached are releasing their new LP, “Welcome The Worms” on April 1st via Dead Oceans. They’ve now shared a new single off the album, “Sour Candy.” It’s sugary pop with a hint of Joan Jett in it.

They also shared a mini-documentary of of the band making the new album, which the band recorded at legendary L.A. studio Sunset Sounds. They open up about the inspirations for their songs and the excitement that comes with recording in the same studio as legendary bands like The Beach Boys, Prince, Rolling Stones.

Bleached are heading on tour this month, kicking it off with SXSW in Austin Texas .

Pre-order ‘Welcome The Worms’ out April 1st, 2016 on Dead Oceans

On April 1st, LA’s Bleached will be releasing their sophomore LP, titled Welcome the Worms, via Bloomington, IN’s Dead Oceans. Created in the chaos of an eviction and broken relationship, the band feel more confident and in control that anytime before, if first reveal “Keep On Keepin’ On” is any indication. The song has a left-coast Ramones aesthetic to it and a appropriate message of perseverance given the personal challenges previously mentioned.
