To many people, 2014 was the year Alex G the G stands for Giannascoli, became something of a boy wonder. He’s got a dozen releases out there already, but “Harvey” sticks like almost nothing else released this year. It’s a clumsily beautiful track, wavering between delicate uncertainty and self-imposed solitude. The myth of undiscovered prodigy holds strong with the story of Alex G, he’s just some kid from north Philly, after all but he’s also the every man. check out the album “DSU” its blue collar rock streamed from the bedroom of a cool loner, which means there are almost no ways in which it ever isn’t appealing.

The brilliantly talented songwriter from Philadelphia has been putting out albums online for a while, but he’s just crossed over with his latest one ‘DSU’. If you’re a fan of Pavement and The Flaming Lips, you need to hear him.

The CMJ Music Marathon, which takes place in clubs across New York City each autumn, began as a way for college-radio programmers to discover new acts for their airwaves. It was in that spirit that NPR Music chose the Philly rock band Cayetana to kick off its recent CMJ show.
Augusta Koch, Allegra Anka and Kelly Olsen are already underground stars in the city of brotherly love, but their audience is poised to grow massively on the strength of Cayetana’s stellar debut album, “Nervous Like Me”. And, as you’ll see here, the band’s got the whole “live” thing down pat.
Like fellow Philly musician Waxahatchee, Cayetana writes short songs about longing. The subject matter varies from love to nostalgia to simply making sense of life in your early 20s, but it almost always hits home — and, more specifically, the heart.

Small Houses, the project of Philadephia-based Jeremy Quentin, impressed on 2013’s Exactly Where You Wanted To Be” for his delicate melodies and poetic lyrics. Now, Quentin has announced forthcoming Small Houses album “Still Talk; Second City”, an effort a year in the making that features collaborations with Mike Brenner (Magnolia Electric Co., Songs:Ohia), Erin Rae (The Meanwhiles) and more. In anticipation of the album’s release, Small Houses has shared album track “Seventeen in Roselore,” which features vocalist Samantha Crain.

“I originally wrote this tune as a duet for Samantha Crain and I,” said Quentin. “At the time, I didn’t hold too much weight behind the direction of the words. Later, the imagery would become the theme for the entire album.”

Still Talk; Second City is set for release on Feb. 10th via The Cottage Recording Co.

Pennsylvania rockers The Districts say their upcoming LP “A Flourish and a Spoil” is “about how things grow but eventually fall apart, kind of like a loss of innocence, the album track “Peaches”, which “ties in with the idea of moving away from home and into Philly.”  which is set for release on 9th February 2015 through Fat Possum Records.

Resonating with a nostalgic charm, ‘Peaches’ is visceral yet melodic, as decidedly 90’s fuzz is pacified by a huge sing along chorus, culminating in a track that sits in the perfect middle ground between slacker-rock and pop, with modern bluesy elements thrown in for good measure. The track itself finds the quartet approaching these heady subjects with true rock and roll resilience, forging a triumphant medley of unrelenting drums and guitars that swing and sway like classical strings. “We won’t throw these memories away,” emotes frontman Rob Grote, mirroring the intensity and fortitude that abounds throughout this anthemic jam.

Philadelphian Band Beach Slang,  have been the talk of the scene in 2014 making a big splash with their powerful debut EP, Who Would Ever Want Anything So Broken?. A supergroup of sorts, featuring James Snyder of Weston, JP Flexner of Ex-Friends and Ed McNulty, formerly of Nona, currently of Crybaby, Beach Slang’s seamless mix of indie, emo and pop/punk is the perfect punk rock Summer soundtrack.

Bleeding Rainbow  from the album—” Interrupt “
The Philadelphian noise-pop band released their fourth album back in February via Kanine Records. This is the first of many Kanine releases to show up on this list. Last year, Bleeding Rainbow made a favorite album in 2013, and then they dropped off a little bit with this one. This record is really raw. The rumor is that they only took two weeks in the studio and did some of the songs in one take. They wanted to project a sound closer to their live sound. go to the Kanine web store. I like the songs with Sarah on lead vocals, and if all the songs on this record were like the one here, I would have it much higher on my list

Philadelphia’s Mumblr recently performed a stripped-down version of “Masturbation” for Space Jam Sessions. This song is off their most recent album release, “Full of Snakes”,

yetis

The Yetis with their splicing of modern influences with the 60′s pop sensibilities which run through each song make this a beautifully balanced morsel of west coast living. Sounding like a Weezer/Beach Boys sandwich, there’s plenty to whet your appetite.”

The Philadelphian band proved to us that you don’t have to be from the West Coast to produce some amazing surf-rock. Our favourite came in the form of ‘Warm California’ a piece of bleary eyed, balanced guitar riffs looking back into the wondrous 60′s. The Yetis gave a little warmth to the harsh Autumn.
