Hazy scenes from Asbury Park abound in the stylish new video, one directed with a VHS-inspired and retro cool by Taylor McFadden. “Domino” is the Hammond-drenched and funk-fueled new single from Nicole Atkins, and it’s taken from her forthcoming Italian Ice LP. Out from May 29th,

“One summer while touring, my band and I got really into listening to French electro music. It’s the perfect kind of music to drive to for long hours at night. Back at home in Nashville, I turned my friend Dex Green onto some of it while we were recording for my other project with Jim Sclavunos of the Bad Seeds. Dex caught the bug and got into it too and we talked about how we could write something together that felt like French electro but would still fit into my style. A few days later he sent over a drum and keys track and we finished the song from there fairly quickly.”

Lot’s happening in my world these days so I figured I’d write you and let you know about all the UK dates, my Spring Shows, my new video for “Brokedown Luck!” Oh, and I’m going back to Willie Nelson’s ranch for another LUCK REUNION next month — this time singing with my pals in The  Texas Gentleman as we do a tribute to some of our favorite / classic country songs.

Thank you for being the best fans ever and supporting me and loving “Goodnight Rhonda Lee” so much. Please keep spinning it, calling your local DJs and requesting it, and telling all your friends and spreading the word. Every album bought, every show ticket, every tweet, every time you tell a friend “check this out,” it keeps us going and we appreciate it so much! Let’s keep this music flowing! Nicole Atkins.

Brokedown Luck was filmed in the Asbury Hotel in Asbury Park, NJ and was created by Big Howl and RonDee Puppets from Philadelphia. These guys are masters of puppetry and weirdly wonderful and awesome! It’s a little Fear and Loathing, a little Shining, Lebowski, and a whole lotta awesome! Freaking Randy of the Redwoods is in it as Floyd the bartender! .

Brokedown Luck was co written by my good friend and Bad Seed, Jim Sclavunos. It’s been so awesome to see you all dancing to this one at our shows. It means so much. When they say, “you get what you give,” it’s so true! When I’m singing and dancin, and see you singing and dancin back at me,

Goodnight Rhonda Lee is out on Single Lock Records

We reintroduced you to a favorite songstress of ours, Nicole Atkins, with her live EP Live from The Eldon Thacker Show at City Winery Nashville a few months back. A performer that Spin magazine once called “the best live band of the festival” at SXSW 2011, Nicole’s charisma has always kept her fans coming back for more.

Now, with her new album Goodnight Rhonda Lee, she’s put that glittering personality of hers on full display, and get more than a dozen zany, sincere, and fascinating updates from in the studio; taking you behind-the-scenes with every step of her creative process.

The titular Rhonda Lee is Atkins’ alter-ego, the one-time alcoholic she leaves behind on this stunning, almost wincingly personal set. Her fourth album, three years in the making, was worth the wait. Atkins has never been a traditional singer-songwriter. Here she shifts to full chanteuse mode, mixing country-politan with a ’60s, Phil Spector-styled approach that sounds like nothing else in contemporary music. It’s big, bold, cinematic and manages to be both sprawling and introspective. She combines Patsy Cline with Nancy Sinatra, k.d. lang and Chris Isaak, the latter who contributes songwriting to a spectacularly original, compelling work that is exhilarating and timeless.

Nicole Atkins’ third album was released in February. It such an expansive sound, widescreen in parts, brimming with unspoken sexual tension and adventurously taking her out on to the dance floor in parts. It’s exploring new sonic territory for her throughout, both in the music, but also in the way she stretches her voice, using it as a fifth instrument to dictate the pace of the song and to provide a dramatic intervention to change the whole mood of the record. “Slow Phaser”  is one of the best records we’ve heard by a female artist this year.
