The Perfect Cast may not be treading any new ground — it’s six catchy punk songs from a band that has already proven over two albums that they’re great at constructing them — but it’s so relentless in its hook-filled approach that it’s impossible not to smile and nod along. Even when Modern Baseball deal with heavy topics like depression and anxiety and feeling like you’re not always all there, they do so with curiosity, verve, and breakneck lyricism. “Can you sing it with your friends, or alone?” they ask in a particularly bitter moment. The answer is both, and thank the Holy Ghost for that.

Modern Baseball – “You’re Gonna Miss It All”   on Run For Cover Records  many times have I made  “Oh, I know this exact feeling” while listening through You’re Gonna Miss it All. , I too have chosen to stay home alone on Friday night. It’s a testament to Jake Ewald and Brendan Lukens’ songwriting when they’re so capable of tapping into such specific moments of young adulthood. It’s a period of life that is often overlooked and scoffed at, but Modern Baseball contextualizes fretful youth and anxious confusion — through quirky, poppy, punky songs — into a thing of beauty. Run For Cover are fast becoming one of my favourite labels.
