The Shacks return with “Wings”, the highly anticipated new single that is sure to fly into the hearts and minds of their fans. A bottom heavy feel good anthem that cuts its way through the speakers from the first note.

Wings is equal parts new sonic landscape and familiar territory for The Shacks. Their debut eponymous EP took the world by storm with its smash hit “This Strange Effect.” Since then, they have been touring the U.S. and Europe alongside the likes of Khurangbin and Chicano Batman supporting their 2018 critically acclaimed debut album Haze. It’s no doubt that all this touring is responsible for this infectiously catchy and tasteful crowd pleaser. The pulsing guitar and downbeat force you to move your feet while Shannon encourages you to take a break from your troubles. This is sure to be an anthem for Spring and should hold fans over while The Shacks finish up their new record due out in the winter of 2021.

Fronted by singer/bassist Shannon Wise and guitarist/producer Max Shrager, The Shacks’ cinematic songs are the soundtrack to a mysterious alternate reality. The Shacks‘ signature sound and blending of genres has gained them a worldwide fan base. The group has toured internationally with artists such as Khruangbin, Lee Fields & The Expressions and Chicano Batman.
Released April 10th, 2020

When you listen to the Shacks’s self-titled debut EP, you might imagine that Shannon Wise and Max Shrager are much older than their respective 18 and 20 years. But when Shannon’s whisper-vocals breeze through the speakers, you hear the youthfulness of their sound which then in turn explains the fearlessness of their songwriting. Both vaguely familiar and completely fresh, The Shacks are one of the most interesting NYC bands to surface in a minute.

Since the release of their first single, “Strange Boy”, which they recorded with El Michels Affair, The Shacks have been compared to 90’s indie icons like Mazzy Star, Jesus and Mary Chain, and Broadcast. As good as those bands are, you wouldn’t find a single one of their records in Max and Shannon’s music collection. All these bands are drinking from the same well, just 20 years apart.

Highlights from The Shacks EP include a cover of the Ray Davies-penned “This Strange Effect”, which Shannon sings as if it were written for her, giving the song an unnerving edge that’s way more interesting than Dave Berry’s tepid original. Also included on the EP is “Orchids,” one of Leon Michels and Max Shrager’s first co-productions, recorded at the legendary Diamond Mine studios. “Orchids” is a truly original piece of music that showcases The Shacks’ adventurousness in the studio. “Left It With the Moon” is a lo-fi lullaby written by Shannon and recorded to 4 track cassette at Max’s home studio in Princeton, NJ. And “Hands In Your Pockets” features the Frightnrs rhythm section laying down a pitch-perfect rocksteady backing track behind Shannon’s deadpan delivery a la Jane Birkin.

Shannon Wise and Max Shrager of The Shacks were born in the late ‘90s, but their misty blend of psychedelic soul is rooted in a deep knowledge of R&B going back decades. Shrager has spent years immersed in the world of Daptone Records, while Wise’s whispery vocals evoke Mazzy Star and Brigitte Bardot. If “This Strange Effect” sounds familiar, you may know it from that iPhone ad.

The Shacks  equal parts Max Shrager and Shannon Wise singing in her soft whispered voice — sound like they’re playing alone with nobody watching. This dreamy, voyeuristic sound was born in a Queens, NY studio in 2014. And while they describe themselves as a rock band, don’t expect the conventional kind.

The story goes that Max brought Shannon to the studio. Max was playing guitar on a track produced by Leon Michels — the producer and co-founder of Big Crown Records — and Michels needed a vocalist. They put Shannon in the booth to try it out. It was her first time ever recording. Then, in one take, the song “Strange Boy” had a singer who completed the vibe. The Shacks were born.

There’s a good chance that when The Shacks release their debut LP later this year on Big Crown Records, they’ll find themselves up among other hallowed names in the Big Crown catalouge like Lee Fields and Lady Wray. All their love of vintage gear and analog recording that the former Daptone/Truth and Soul Records fan brought over to their Diamond Mine Studio in Long Island City has a gorgeous effect on The Shacks’ brand of ass-wiggling AM radio pop and easy to love hooks.

The Shacks were born. Shannon comes from a strong musical pedigree. Her father, a producer, ran a Manhattan recording studio, and her mother is a singer-songwriter. Artists and bands of all stripes passed through her life growing up. Her infectious, eclectic voice and songwriting skills are testaments to her remarkable natural talent.

Shannon Wise’s voice is slight in its wispy airiness but disarmingly strong against a solid foundation of songs that could have been written 60 years ago. Their first record together, entitled Haze and forthcoming on Big Crown Records, is jointly produced by Shrager and Michels. Each song sounds both like an exploration and reflection of the relationship between Shannon and Max. You can hear a kind of invigorating creativity between them — songs written for and about each other, trying to express the inexpressible aspects of youth and love.
