Oakland’s Happy Diving make the kind of catchy, riffy sludge pop that should appeal to fans of Dinosaur Jr or Torche, or a newer band like California X. They’ve been around for a few years, with a album and a EP release under their belts, and they’re set to release their second album titled “Electric Soul Unity” on August 19th via Topshelf Records. We’ve got the chance to hear  “Don’t Be Afraid Of Love” from that album, which you can listen to below.

Ever since the band’s scintillating debut, they’ve been making frequent appearances on year-end lists from the Music Blogs and more importantly  growing sharper with each successive release. Recently, there was a post that spotlighted “Holy Ground” a towering  single from the band’s forthcoming , “Electric Soul Unity”. Opening with “Bigger World”  a winking nod towards their outstanding debut album. The band makes no bones about the fact that they’ve dramatically increased the size of their scope. Everything from the production to the songwriting indicates the band’s set loftier goals for themselves from the very outset of this record. It’s an extraordinary effort from a band that’s more than ready to take on any challengers and it won’t go down without putting up an unforgettable fight.

We’re loving this new single from San Francisco’s Happy Diving. It is the follow up to the excellent short, sludgy punk of last year’s “Big World” debut long player.

You can listen to So Bunted here  a song that somehow manages to match a purposeless, melancholy feel to an energetic, purposeful riff and make the juxtaposition work perfectly. Buy from Topshelf Records here.

Samuelito Cruz is known around the San Francisco Bay Area for playing with breakout bands Happy Diving and Never Young, but he’s also been releasing a significant number of songs since May of last year under the Toner moniker. Over the course of five months, Cruz recorded a series of songs alongside his brother in a shed behind his old house in Oakland. The result is his debut self-titled LP, which is set to be released in the spring of this year. On “High And Dry,” Cruz attempts to dive into the murky waters of self-reflection, but his effort turns into more of a bellyflop as each new verse emanates exhaustion. The track is inaugurated by a statement, of disaffection — “We’re all so tired of living and breathing when everyday’s the same it gets deceiving” — but Cruz’s lofty contemplations of existence begin to narrow and become more specific by the song’s close: “I know you’re sitting at home while I’m stoned & alone as I’m heading back to sleep.”

Happy Diving released a scorcher of an EP and a burner of a full-length LP in 2014, but I still feel they’re slept on. Stop that.
Matt Berry, Samuelito Cruz, Mikey Rivera, and Matt Yankovitz have only been together since 2013 and, judging by their output, waste zero time when in front of their instruments. Splashed with humid riffs and bright melodies, Happy Diving’s sound is beautifully bittersweet; a marriage of power and pretty reminiscent of Ovlov and Tony Molina.
Big World is a must hear sludge pop record that’ll have you singing along to some of life’s most disappointing and unnerving moments.

Bay Area bred band Happy Diving as one of our Best New Artists of the year and “Big World” was a huge part of that. Splashed with humid riffs and bright melodies, Happy Diving’s sound is beautifully bittersweet; a marriage of power and pretty reminiscent of Ovlov and Tony Molina. “Big World” is a must hear sludge pop record that’ll have you singing along to some of life’s most disappointing and unnerving moments. Adding more body and oomph to their sound, producer Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Joyce Manor, Whirr) took all of HD’s bubbling energy, potential, and power oozing out of their EP and doubled-down on it all, channeling it into a stunning debut full of heavy, unrelenting guitars that will pound your head into your intestines.
