Vermont indie-folk singer/songwriter Henry Jamison releases his new EP Tourism on May 15th via Color Study, and this new song features guest vocals by Grizzly Bear’s Ed Droste, who adds a bit of a Veckatimest-style touch with his harmonies. In an era in which the magnitude of cultural sickness is coming to light, Henry Jamison has had some time to reflect. On his second record, Gloria Duplex, the Vermont songwriter deconstructs ideas of masculinity from boyhood to adulthood and what it means to be a white, middle class male in America today. “All of the images that were coming to me were of boyhood or of manhood,” says Jamison. “It ended up that every song on the record is in some way addressing that subject.” It’s a lot to unpack.

Recorded over a two-week period in New York City during January 2018, Gloria Duplex features an all-star cast including producer Thomas Bartlett (Sufjan Stevens, The National, Yoko Ono, St. Vincent, Florence & The Machine) string arranger Rob Moose (Bon Iver, Arcade Fire, Laura Marling, Perfume Genius, Phoebe Bridgers) and mixer Patrick Dillett (Rhye, David Byrne, Glen Hansard).

After their last tour around the album Shields, the members of Grizzly Bear took some time off. With each person concentrating on other ventures, So it would be awhile before they would come to collaborate as a band once again. Grizzly Bear’s Painted Ruins is definitely the return from any band who seemed to somewhat disappear. Along with great tunes, they’ve also returned with a few really entertaining videos to accompany their singles. The newest release is a clip for “Losing All Sense,” featuring a bunch of blondes doing just that.

As soon as we see the opening shot of high-heeled feet wrapped in plastic, we know we’re in for something weird here. The feet belong to a drenched Busy Phillips, who joins a group at an otherwise pretty standard wine-and-dine, but things soon take a turn for the surreal.

“‘Losing All Sense’ felt like an upbeat, fun thing to release,” said frontman Ed Droste “The video is even more of a dichotomy—it’s like David Lynch meets the The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills meets Heathers or something. It’s very campy and dark and surreal.”

“Losing All Sense” is the fifth single release from Painted Ruins, following “Three Rings,” “Mourning Sound,” “Four Cypresses” and “Neighbors.”

Grizzly Bear’s new video for “Mourning Sound” is, according to a press release, “a playful, pastel-drenched commentary on women’s liberation.” Directed by Beatrice Pegard and starring Clemence Poesy (Harry Potter, In Bruges), the clip features a group of sternly defiant women dancing their way through a luxurious mansion. There’s the take-no-shit bride, the race car driver-slash-mother, and the literally bright scientist. You even get some drumming on man butts and rainbow nipple beams, so perhaps the video should be labeled slightly NSFW. Take a look up above.

“Mourning Sound” is the lead single off Painted Ruins, Grizzly Bear’s first new album since 2012’s Shields. Due out August 18th, the band will support the release with a full fall tour.

Hey all. Thanks to everyone for sticking with us as we navigate the wide world of modern social media album rollouts. The promotional journey is just beginning! Weeeee!

Here’s a track from our new record. We feel like it’s a good introduction to the album, a good starting point, and we are proud of it. As you may know we’ve been working on this thing for a long time, after a long time away, and we are finally at the finish line. We’ve had a lot of fun making this one and we are excited to get back out into the world again and play some shows and all the rest!

More info to come. Don’t know exactly in what order, but it is sure to be a slow and painful drip of minor details, spanning months, culminating in the release of a new record of which you’ve probably already heard half the songs, by which point you may or may not have lost interest and moved on and forgotten what we were doing in the first place. We appreciate your patience and support! We love y’all and thank you again for hanging around this dusty page for these years, it’s going to be a lot more active soon! It truly means the world to us.

Sincerely,
Grizzly Bear

Ps. The idea of the snippets on our new instagram @grizzlybear was something we thought people would enjoy. Our songs are usually so layered and dense and it seemed like a fun way to peel back the onion layers of the new album. So to clarify, it wasn’t meant to torture you but more meant to show you small pieces of all the songs from the forthcoming album! .
