I’m telling you about Night School right now. Their record doesn’t come out on Graveface Records for over a month, but you can mark it in your diary so you don’t forget.

If you like Dum Dum Girls or Honeyblood, you’re also will love Night School. Alexandra Morte (Whirr) fronts the Oakland-based trio with a Ronnie Spector-ish vulnerability that belies the heavy guitar and drums surrounding her voice. With harmonies from drummer Baylie Arin and bass by Cheyenne Avant they make an undeniably sweet sound.

The opening guitar riff on “Casanova” might be my favorite track on Blush. It’s a very simple kind of thing, but when it’s joined by the other instruments it creates such a joyful noise. “Last Disaster” the album’s lead single, but the best song on the record. Morte’s lyrics show us a woman in a downward spiral: “It must be nice to hold your head so high, to see a breaking heart and not even wanna cry. It doesn’t matter anymore, I put my guts out on the floor, and for what?”

The songs fit very well into the style they’re going for with Blush. Tunes about love and heartbreak that could have easily come out in the heyday of The Shangri-La’s or The Shirelles. None encapsulates the feeling like “Teen Feelings,” a jaunty romance that finds the right balance of näiveté and sincerity. “Telling stories at my parent’s place, unintentional smile when I see your face, I wanna grab you by the hands and take away the space between your lips and mine.”

You can pre-order the record here (I got the colored vinyl)

Aimee Argote’s voice has the power to bring music to life. The Des Ark singer, guitarist and founder can invigorate a song with her soft, compelling vocals. In the band’s new video, her simple routine brings to life a wooden figurine, which dances wildly, snakes in hand, around a fire — a contrast to the gentle music and sentimental words.

“Snake Stuff,” from Des Ark’s third full-length album, Everything Dies, captures Argote’s enchantment and tacit strength. “And when will I get used to this? / Breathing life into these things I love until they quit on me.” Sweet and strong, the song and its video find magic in the ordinary.

Andy Byers, who directed the video, writes that he sees Argote as “a force of a woman, and a source of power that gets pulled from somewhere ethereal. I liked the idea that by performing these daily rituals, Aimee ends up becoming the creator of something beyond her understanding or realization.”

Graveface Records is a small independent label with a focus on all things hand-made, hand-assembled & unique.

Whirr is an American shoegaze band from San Francisco, California, United States. They formed in 2010, originally as Whirl. The name was created by the original drummer, Sergio Miranda, in the midst of recording the band’s first demos as a nameless project. It was a homage to all the bands of “the Scene That Celebrates Itself” (Lush, Ride, Moose, Medicine, Lilys, etc.). They had to legally change the name after a woman performing acoustic covers of Black Sabbath songs trademarked “Whirl” had threatened a lawsuit.
Whirr’s sound is often compared to My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive. Founding guitarist Nick Bassett also played in the band Deafheaven surrounding and including the release of their 2011 album, Roads to Judah.
After a self-released demo cassette and the Distressor EP, the band signed to Tee Pee Records in 2011. The original vocalist Byanca Munoz left the band because of creative differences, and was soon replaced by Alexandra Morte (Night School,).
In 2013, the original drummer Sergio Miranda left the band and was replaced by Devin Nunes. Former vocalist Alexandra Morte also left the band and was replaced by Kristina Esfandiari (Miserable, King Woman). The band released a live EP entitled “Part Time Punks Sessions” on April 20, 2013. It was a performance recorded in 2012 that featured the band’s previous lineup.
