Combing everything from break beats to neo-classical influences, woodwind instrumentation and post rock; it’s fair to say that These New Puritans are one of the most innovative British bands for a generation. Formed in 2006 by twin brothers Jack and George Barnett, the Southend-on-Sea have steadily built their cult following amongst discerning listeners and now they are back with their accomplished fourth album ‘Inside The Rose’.

Recorded in Berlin, a city long known for its creative freedom and pioneering forays into the many forms of electronica, the Barnett boys have created an intriguing and lush 40-minute listening containing just nine tracks which unfold in the most wonderfully unexpected way. ‘Beyond Black Suns’ starts with oppressive beats to rise with operatic vocal accompaniment, ‘Where the Trees Are On Fire’ is perhaps Jack’s most natural singing performance and feels like an actor breaking the fourth wall in some haunting musical and ‘Anti-Gravity’ draws on oriental influences for its spacious dark wave synth sound like a lost scrap of soundtrack from Bladerunner.

“My favourite kind of music is very clear but also mysterious at the same time. If you have a strange idea always present it in the clearest possible way. Don’t mess about with pretentious abstract rubbish, that’s the kind of thing we don’t relate to. A lot of the time George takes what I’ve come up with and nudges me in a certain way. Many of the vocals were completely different. The usual thing that would happen was I would play him a vocal that I had recorded, then he would listen to it for ten seconds then press stop and not say anything. And that’s when I knew that it wasn’t quite right and I would go back and do something else. Being brothers and working in music means there are no niceties. We can be absolutely brutal to each other, but in a way. It’s okay because you can’t be sensitive about it, you can’t be precious. You get past all the niceties and you get to the heart of things.” – Jack Barnett

Essex band Sun Arcana  have revealed their new music video for ‘Everybody’. Directed by Rolling Vision, the clip showcases a softer side to the band, reflecting on personal struggles and emotional vulnerability.

“We came up with the foundations of ‘Everybody’ after I’d been through probably the hardest time in my life,” says guitarist Harry Acreman. “I’d just spent five days in hospital following surgery and was really keen to go home. The first thing I did was pick up my guitar and play the chords. This song reminds me of that struggle, but also how friends and family really helped you get through it. The lyrics reflect this – letting someone you care about know that it’s okay to open up and ask for help.”

Residing out of Honchurch, Essex from a family with both a strong pugilist history (his father an ABA champion) and musical heritage (his grandfather was a jazz guitarist with the BBC), Joseph J. Jones sings beautifully emotive songs that open up a window into his life.

Recently signed to Communion and citing main influences as, Johnny Cash, Kanye West and West Ham United; Joseph J. Jones has spent the last year collaborating with writer / producer Richard Frenneaux. Uncompromising and gifted with an incredible voice, JJ.J’s work is both intimate and soulful.

Eliza and the Bear have unveiled the video for their new single, ‘Lion’s Heart’.

The Essex five-piece will release their self-titled debut album in February, after decamping to Nashville last year to work with Kings Of Leon producer Jacquire King.

Just in time to soundtrack your summer, they’ve now revealed the video to their latest single, ‘Lion’s Heart’. Speaking of the song, James Kellegher said,‘Lion’s Heart’ is a song telling someone that they are an absolute hero, but they don’t even know it. It’s about finding your own strength.”

Its accompanying video sees the band performing on the outskirts of a foggy maze, inside of which a young woman is attempting to navigate her way around, haunted by faces in the hedge and ghostly figures. It’s like a more sinister version of Labyrinth, with a more morbid ending.

Longy a  singer songwriter from Leigh On Sea in Essex, the decaying glamour of the British seaside rings through every note .Another man from Essex we spent most of the first part of the year asking everybody we could find #whoislongy? A staple of the London scene it was damn near impossible to find out any information on Longy after we spotted him last May. What we did know is that he wrote some damn find tunes. Dripping with veracity and as shaped and fully-formed as an artist in their prime he spoke of social injustices without being patronising, love with out being wishy-washy and then smashed us over the head with his riffs and rhythm. We are still asking the question #whoislongy? and we hope some record companies are as well.
