Canadian trio Basement Revolver are set to release their hotly anticipated debut album in August, and have this week shared the latest sample of it, “Knocking”.

Knocking is a deeply personal song for chief songwriter Chrisy Hurn, as she puts it, “I often still can’t sing it without crying.” The track details her writing a letter to her family that explored her past, things she wasn’t proud of and, in her own words, “made me feel like I wasn’t the “good christian woman” that they had hoped I would one day become.”It deals with the anger that inspired the letter, and also the acceptance, love and forgiveness that she found afterwards. Musically, it’s possibly the most mature the band have ever sounded, there’s a country-twang to the guitars alongside their usual, melody-led approach to expansive soundscapes. You could cite reference points from Big Thief to Angel Olsen and be in the right area of the musical world, ultimately though Basement Revolver shine entirely on their own terms.

Formed in the honest grit of Hamilton, Ontario, Basement Revolver have seen a quick and notable ascent into the spotlight with their unique brand of 90’s infused indie-rock. The band has been able to formulate a captivating and refined hypnotic aural experience typically found with those who are well beyond their years.

After releasing their debut single, ‘Johnny’. Basement Revolver from Hamilton, Ontario created with this first song encountered an unstoppable wave of support; managing to establish themselves with grassroots endorsements from sites such as DIY Magazine, Indie Shuffle, CBC and Exclaim! Magazine to name only a handful. respected tastemakers hailing ‘Johnny’ a “‘favourite song of the year’ contender” and another said they had a sound that was hard to forget once it took hold. Formed in the honest grit of Hamilton, Ontario, Basement Revolver have seen a quick and notable ascent into the spotlight with their unique brand of 90’s infused indie-rock. The band has been able to formulate a captivating and refined hypnotic aural experience typically found with those who are well beyond their years.

The trio have now returned, with a recently crafted EP in ‘Agatha’ and a new single ‘Mountains’ giving fresh indication of Basement Revolver’s towering aptitude for personally heart-rending music. Built on reverberating and poignant guitars, Hurn’s powerful voice is affectionate and unyielding as she sings from the very bottom “I am weak, but I carry you to mountains on my feet”. Reeling from hurt, Hurn steadily learns to be able to trust, their channelling of the past and detailing it’s overwhelming effect on the present and future a striking and commanding element to their music.

Speaking about the new track, Hurn details the intimate nature of it’s beginnings. “Mountains is a pretty personal song to me, it was written a few years back and reworked for the EP. I had a hard time believing that people could have good intentions when it came to relationships and love, but I’ve since learned that is not true. This song helped me to face parts of my past, and for that I am grateful.”

The debut EP from Canadian trio Basement Revolver a new band from Hamilton Ontario. The Canadian’s have been teasing the release via a series of ever improving tracks and earlier this week they shared another snippet of the record in the shape of new single, Lake, Steel, Oil.

Whilst the bands previous output had already shown they could do energetic, and somewhat introspective indie-pop; on Lake, Steel, Oil they showcase a completely different side to their music. With nods to the likes of Lanterns On The Lake or Waxahatchee’s more recent output, it’s a gentle swell of musical ideas. Building around a lone guitar line and pulsing bass-line, eventually singer, Chrisy Hern’s vocal enters with a heartbroken tone reminiscent of Alvvay’s Molly Rankin, joined latterly by echoing, grandiose percussion. Dramatic and expansive, without ever falling into clichéd “here’s our big song” territory, it’s far better than a band so new to this musical game have any right to be. Another string in the band’s bow, and one that suggests there’s far more to Basement Revolver than they’re currently letting on, a very exciting prospect indeed.

Hamilton, Ontario’s Basement Revolver plays introspective and emotional indie rock music, reminiscent of The Pixies and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
