This debut from Adult Jazz shows a lightness of touch that’s few and far between on first albums. The songs seem to start at a small point in an undefined centre before pulsing outwards in all directions, changing form and structure as they go, it’s almost impossible to describe what this music sounds like, or how it might make you feel.

You get the feeling that the next record might be entirely different given how unpredictable this one is, but for now, here, this is an album without boundaries .

“It feels like “Gist”  came out of nowhere, fully formed. Full of wonder and joy – it’s both texturally ravishing and textually fascinating: songs, in other words, that tackle big subjects – the mediation of (homo)sexuality by church and society; what it means to be a man – with a transporting grace and music whose unexpected richness, space and invention creates a profound resonance.”

From the sound of this first single, Leeds based band  Adult Jazz doesn’t have much to do with jazz, nor with the kind of tongue-in-cheek, smooth-as-hell lounge music homage you might expect from a band with the word “adult” in its name. Mostly, it’s bluesy, a cappella-style crooning, accented with some skeletal drums and baritone/falsetto vocal harmonies. There’s a couple other elements that make their way in—electric guitar, some jagged break beats—but more than cohere into a full band sound, “Springful” feels committed to its own sparseness, experimentally building each counter intuitively catchy groove from as few sonic elements as possible. It’s got a strange beauty that lives up to the weird-as-fuck band moniker, and it’s one of three tracks on Adult Jazz’ upcoming “Am Gone”/”Springful” 12″ single which they’re self-releasing on their own label, Spare Thought Records,

Two weeks ago, over 1300 bands settled down in New York City for the CMJ Music Marathon, including the Leeds indie pop band “Adult Jazz”. This quartet’s debut album, “Gist Is”, is a sophisticated and sensual mélange of songs that ramble and blossom in beautiful, unexpected ways. They made quite a splash at CMJ, landing on radio presenter Bob Boilen’s list of his top-10-discoveries from the 2014-CMJ Festival. The band’s frontman Harry Burgess kept a diary of his adventures at CMJ Adult Jazz travels through New York via stops at Stonewall, the Schomburg Center in Harlem and the High Line.

Here’s a band with a truly unique sound. The guitar playing is mostly undistorted and spare: There are punctuating moments of trombone and keyboards with delicate sometimes high, always soft vocals. I didn’t walk away remembering a single melody and that’s usually not a positive thing for me, but I loved living in this sound. It’s fresh and calculated, rhythmic but not dancey. I don’t know where this band is headed but I’m going to follow them with interest and get to see them as often as possible. If you’re not spinning their fantastic debut album “Gist” which is regularly on the turntable, you’re missing on one of the finest treasures of 2014. The British art-rockers made their U.S. debut at CMJ, stopping in for a few select showcases. With a band like Adult Jazz, you need a small intimate venue with a hushed crowd that will help you soak in all the quiet spaces and stop-start harmonies that Adult Jazz create. they played early on in the day at End Of The road festival without one of their band members and still sounded fresh and mesmerising.
