“After a steady build up of stateside buzz and support, Kettering, England’s favorite psychedelic sons Temples are announcing their debut full-length, Sun Structures, out February 11th on Fat Possum. It’s a record that’s destined to set out the band’s stall as Britain’s premier retro-futurists, with influences ranging from ’60s psychedelia to Motown, glam, and Krautrock, all viewed through a very modern kaleidoscope – and always keeping the song at the heart of it all. Recorded in the box-room of guitarist/vocalist James Bagshaw’s home, the aim was “Jack Nitzsche on a DIY budget,” and with one listen to first single off the record, “Mesmerize,” it’s pretty clear that they’ve succeeded.” – Read the whole bio at Fat Possum

At the end of January, the 26th if we want to be precise, I found myself at the Royal Albert Hall for the first time since I came to London.

The reason why?

These cool guys were playing a very intimate gig, supported by The Society of the Golden Slippers! (http://www.golden-slippers.com/Society_of_the_Golden_Slippers/home.html)

and it was just lovely

The website For Folk’s Sake has made a good review about it, check it out!

BROKEN TWIN – ” Glimpse of Time “

Im beginning to really love this band BROKEN TWIN another stunning song this should be some debut

Mad Mackerel Recommends >>> Broken Twin Broken Twin will release her debut album May through ANTI- on the 29th April.

It is a timely post for us as we are feeling particularly well disposed to all things Danish at the moment and Broken Twin is the synonym of 25-year-old Danish songwriter Majke Voss Romme. She turned plenty of heads (and ears) with her debut single in November Sun Has Gone (see our post here)which also featured a cover of Johnny Thunders’ You Can’t Put Your Arms Around A Memory on the flipside.

Her music is largely made up of piano, strings and haunting vocals, and May is compiled from more than three years of intensive songwriting and based on over 200 sketches recorded on laptops and phones. The results are an intensely personal album – warm, lo-fi, minimal and spacious – that adheres to a singular vision.

Listen to the gorgeous new single Glimpse…

one of the best albums of 2013

Typhoon is a desperately optimistic band from Portland. A rather large band, full of amazing musicians, their music could be compared to Sufjan Stevens with more pop sensibility. The music is beautiful with lyrics aimed at your heart.

Give the album a spin, I loved “Young Fathers”, Common Sentiments” and “Dreams of Cannibalism”.

AUGUSTINES – Augustines

Augustines, formerly known as We Are Augustines, are back with a new self-titled LP. In an instant the record is sure to capture you. It’s a fresh start that’s bigger and bolder than their previous work. It leans on the shoulders of arena rock as rising shouts and chants are spread throughout the album. However, it sounds genuine and distinct. Retrospectively looking at their previous work, which was rather dark and covert (as its songs were inspired by the suicide of singer Billy McCarthy’s brother), and contrasting it to this new piece, this album speaks of life and overcoming.

RHODES is coming to the rescue rooms very soon

5055489289359_1.170x170-75 Rhodes is a 24 year old singer/songwriter from Hertfordshire, England. His voice is a smooth caress, which nicely collaborates with the melancholic guitar plucks in this amazing, powerful song, “Run.” His debut EP, Raise Your Love , came out last year. He has since then supported the likes of and sometimes toured with London Grammar and Vance Joy and has performed for Burberry a few times. He is still just starting out, but if he keeps releasing beautiful songs like this, he will have no problem finding success.

Slow Dim

We have found, as we get older, that our memory is not what it once was. For example, we can forget telephone conversations we have just had mere moments after having them, or things we were supposed to do, like send emails in a timely manner (sorry everyone we owe them to by the way). So really, it came as no surprise when we started listening to the latest demo/idea/beginning (they call it a pop art demo) from Slowdim and had no idea when or why we started following them on Soundcloud.

Of course, the obvious answer to the question of why we started is because they are very good and that’s certainly supported by the two minutes of “Run Away”, a new idea, they say, that might get extended.

We certainly hope it does, as we really love its gentle dreaminess. It opens with gentle sepia tinted guitar plucks…

London based singer songwriter Rose Betts already has gigs at a number of prestigious venues in her home town under her belt and she’s impressed enough to earn herself first place in the renowned “SONGSLAM” competition held at The Regal Room, Hammersmith. After a few listens to ‘Teach Me To Love’, it’s easy to see why the enchanting youngster is winning so many fans.

Rose’s gorgeous voice takes centre stage here, and rightly so. Her powerful, ethereal vocals are sprinkled, soaring gracefully above the delicately stroked piano keys that sparkle throughout the track’s backbone. With her elegant and accomplished delivery, comparisons between Betts and Regina Spektor are inevitable but, here, entirely justified. In fact, ‘Teach Me To Love’ comes across as so beautifully matured and so rich in its angelic wonderment, that had you heard this on Radio 2 this morning without knowing the real voice behind it, you’d be…
