“Cannonball” is the highly anticipated debut album from Man/Woman/Chainsaw. Produced by Margo Broom (Fat White Family, Big Joanie), and Seth Evans (Geordie Greep, Black Midi), it includes the singles ‘Only Girl’, and ‘Nosedive’. Grand and exuberant, rich with unconventional structures and world-beating choruses, the long-awaited record makes good on the band’s years of hard touring while unearthing new dimensions and unlikely facets in their songwriting; It is a sharp, smart first record, one which presents Man/Woman/Chainsaw exactly as they are right now.
The London six-piece Man/Woman/Chainsaw are releasing their debut album, “Cannonball”, this Friday via Fiction, but before that they are helping us launch our new Bedroom Sessions video sessions, in which we film an artist performing in their bedroom (or in the case of a band, in one of the member’s bedrooms). In this first Bedroom Session, Man/Woman/Chainsaw perform two songs from “Cannonball: “Something Else to Give” and “Nosedive.”
Emmie-Mae Avery sings lead vocals on “Nosedive” and had this to say about the song in a press release: “It’s a song about longing for both comfort and freedom simultaneously in a relationship through the metaphor of being an injured bird needing shelter. We turned it into a danceable upbeat track, which made the tone shift throughout the song as though you find a way to pick yourself up and fly away.”
Vera Leppänen sings lead vocals on “Something Else to Give” and had this to say about it: “‘Something Else to Give’ is a song on love and disappointment. It talks about exerting yourself for someone who doesn’t reciprocate the effort. We wrote it kind of in a flash—the process felt very organic and intuitive; it immediately felt like the obvious closer for the album.”
“Cannonball” was recorded at RAK Studios, Man/Woman/Chainsaw features three lead vocalists who alternate, depending on the song: Billy Ward (vocals, guitars), Emmie-Mae Avery, (vocals, keys/synths), and Vera Leppänen (vocals, bass). The rest of the lineup features Clio Harwood (violin), Lola Cherry (drums), and Billy Doyle (guitars).
