Record Store Day Black Friday titles, 2021

With summer winding down and the holiday season steadily approaching, it has come time for Record Store Day to reveal its list of Black Friday offerings. After 2020 and 2021 saw stunted and staggered Record Store Day releases split up into “Drops” dates, the November 26th celebration of all things vinyl will take place all at once at record stores.

Though there are hundreds of records, CDs, cassettes, and more headed for shelves that day ,here is a list of releases we thought would appeal most. For a complete list of Record Store Day Black Friday see the webpage

Aerosmith road lp cover 5x5

Aerosmith – The Road Starts Hear

Boston 1971: A historic early recording of Aerosmith in their rehearsal room – just the band, crew and friends captured on Joe Perry’s tape recorder. This never-before-heard performance showcases the early, raw talent of this future Hall Of Fame band, one year before signing to Columbia Records, and two years before their eponymous debut, which featured many of these songs, including their enduring anthem ”Dream On”.

LIVE ON THE INTERNET Sleeve

All The Witches – Live On the Internet

All Them Witches are known for their loud and lengthy live shows. 2020 found the band releasing their critically acclaimed album, Nothing As The Ideal. An album release from this band would traditionally be followed by a lengthy 18-month tour across the globe, but due to an international pandemic, the band’s touring plans were brought to a halt. This did not stop All Them Witches from assembling in a studio to broadcast a live set for their fans. The set was roundly received as an amazing performance and fans immediately inquired as to whether or not this show would be available on vinyl.

Big Brother & The Holding Company (featuring Janis Joplin)- Combination of the Two: Live at the Monterey International Pop Festival

Big Brother performed at the Monterey Pop festival on both Saturday June 17th and Sunday June 18th, 1967. Both sets are included on this RSD Black Friday release pressed on psychedelic colour vinyl in a high-gloss tip-on jacket.

EP Collection Volumes 1 & 2 (Coloured Vinyl) Sleeve

Cranes – EP Collection Volumes 1 & 2

Cranes formed in 1985 in Portsmouth, England by siblings Alison and Jim Shaw. They were named after the many mechanical cranes around the city’s docks. Cranes are best known for the high-pitched vocals of lead singer Alison. EP Collection, Volumes 1 & 2 is a triple disc set that features the majority of the Cranes‘ EP releases, which were among the group’s best works. Cranes rarely sounded as effective or as eerie as they did on these EPs. This set features 28 songs total; an extensive selection of their biggest successes such as “Jewel”, “Paris and Rome (Flood Mix)”,”Beach Mover”, ”Adrift”, “Inescapable”, “Lilies (Flood Mix)” and many more. This collection is available on vinyl for the first time. 3LP, Silver & Blue Vinyl, Numbered
This is a limited edition of 1500 individually numbered copies on silver & blue marbled vinyl, only available on Record Store Day.

Dave davis kinked cover

Dave Davies – Kinked

Kinked is a compilation of Dave Davies’ work from the late ’90s and early 2000s. A lot of this disc features selections from the 1998 collection Unfinished Business: Dave Davies Kronikles 1963-1998, which itself contained a bunch of re-recordings from the late ’90s of classic Kinks tunes. That accounts for a little under half of this 15-track collection; the rest contains selections from the 2000 live album Rock Bottom: Live at the Bottom Line (four tracks) and 2002’s studio album Bug (two cuts), plus a couple of relative rarities – “When the Wind Blows (Emergency),” which was written for the End Hunger Network in 1997, and a cover of George Harrison’s “Give Me Love, Give Me Peace on Earth,” which was for a 2003 Harrison tribute album – and a brand new tune, “God in My Brain,” which was written and recorded in 2006, after Davies recovered from a serious stroke.

Hjyyfzyw

Dire Straits – Encores EP

Dire Straits last year released a great vinyl Box Set of their studio output, but it was missing the band’s live works. Their last official release will be making its way to LP: the Encores EP. Released in 1993 as a sequel to the live album On the Night, this four-track concert piece will be pressed on pink wax and comes with a special lithograph of the cover art.

418466189532 800

Fleetwood Mac – Alternative Live

A fourteen-song LP pulled from the Fleetwood Mac Super Deluxe release, including a further seven songs from the Tusk tour, four from the 1977 Rumours tour and three from the 1982 Mirage tour. Released for RSD Black Friday for the first time on double vinyl.

Fillmore west match 1st 1989

Grateful Dead – Fillmore West San Francisco CA 3/1/1969

Available for the first time on Vinyl. Produced for release by David Lemieux. “Many years ago, in the tape trading era, there were certain years in the Grateful Dead’s history for which tapes were quite rare; thankfully, the tapes from the rarer years that we did have in our collections tended to be some of the best of that particular year. And from the 1969, the tape that we listened to more than any other was 3/1/69. It is an exceptionally well-played show, and is a microcosmic representation of the Grateful Dead’s three albums from 1968-1969, played chronologically. Opening with Anthem Of The Sun’s “That’s It For The Other One” and the penultimate live performance of “New Potato Caboose”, the show then proceeds with four straight songs from the next album, 1969’s Aoxomoxoa. These then flow directly into the piece de résistance, the Live/Dead suite. Even by 1969 standards, 3/1/69 has a manic, controlled-chaos energy, most certainly feeling like a Saturday night celebration at their hometown venue, which it was. From a year with countless A+ performances, 3/1/69 stands out as one of the best.”

The Philly Tapes Sleeve

Hall and Oates – The Philly Tapes

Recorded in the throes of their Philadelphia folk-rock phase during the late sixties, this record is a collection of rare early recordings by Daryl Hall & John Oates before their signing to Atlantic Records.
Prior to releasing their debut album “Whole Oats,’‘ these two composer-performers had sketched out a series of songs, several of which went on to become early Hall & Oates classics. A great piece of rock history showcasing that early Philly sound before Hall & Oates went on to become one of America’s greatest pop-rock duos.
Pressed on heavyweight transparent transparent orange colour vinyl with individual hand-numbering.

Jimi Hendrix Paris 67

The Jimi Hendrix Experience – Paris 67

Another amazing release from the official Jimi Hendrix “bootleg label” Dagger Records, this raw, direct to two-track, live recording from the Olympia Theatre in Paris was captured for French national radio and documents the Experience’s triumphant return to France almost one year from the date of their 1966 debut. Recorded on October 9th, 1967, The Experience were in top form, roaring out of the gate with “Stone Free,” and following with vibrant renditions of “Hey Joe,” “Fire,” “The Wind Cries Mary” and “Catfish Blues.” “Rock Me Baby” and a compact “Red House” prefaced a grinding, muscular take of “Purple Haze,” followed by “Wild Thing,” replete with a rousing, tongue-in-cheek lead vocal that emphatically closed the show.

Released for RSD Black Friday on red and blue mixed vinyl.

Jason Isbell And The 400 Unit – Georgia Blue

Jason Isbell And The 400 Unit “Georgia Blue” Jason Isbell tweeted on 11/5/2020 – “If Biden wins Georgia I’m gonna make a charity covers album of my favourite Georgia songs- REM, Gladys Knight, Vic Chesnutt, Allmans, Cat Power, Precious Bryant, Now It’s Overhead, etc… And damn is that gonna be fun”

Georgia Blue is a labour of love. On election day 2020, when I saw that there was a good chance the state of Georgia might go blue, I came up with an idea: to record an album of Georgia– related songs as a thank you to the state and donate the money to a Georgia based non-profit organization. I will admit my motivations were a bit selfish. For years, I’ve been looking for an excuse to record these songs with my band and some friends. The songs on this album are some of my favourite Georgia-related songs, but the track-list is not meant to be comprehensive. I would love to cover Outkast and 2 Chainz, but I don’t think the finished product would be very good. We’re a rock band, so we covered rock songs. We have roots in blues and R&B, so we enlisted some brilliant artists to help us pull off songs by Precious Bryant, James Brown, and Gladys Knight. My favourite part of the Georgia Blue recording process was having the opportunity to work with these very special artists, and I thank them: Amanda Shires, Brittney Spencer, Adia Victoria, Brandi Carlile, Julien Baker, Bèla Fleck, Chris Thile, Steve Gorman, Peter Levin, and John Paul White. I hope you enjoy listening to these recordings as much as we enjoyed making them. Keep listening to good music and fighting the good fight.” – Jason Isbell

Carole King Live at the BBC

Carole King, Carole King in Concert – Live at the BBC 1971 (12″ Vinyl)

Previously unreleased on vinyl, Carole King in Concert – Live at the BBC 1971 was recorded live for the BBC In Concert Series (produced by Stanley Dorfman) in 1971. Featuring her long time friend/musical collaborator Danny “Kootch” Kortchmar on guitar and a backing band including members of Jo Mama (who appear on Carole’s seminal Tapestry), King performs a timeless setlist of her classics including “I Feel the Earth Move,” “(You Make Me Feel) Like A Natural Woman,” “So Far Away” (featuring James Taylor), “It’s Too Late,” “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” and “Up on the Roof.”

Little Feat – Electrif Lycanthrope: Live at Ultra-Sonic Studios, 1974

Nestled between the classic LP releases Dixie Chicken and Feats Don’t Fail Me Now and performed for a small and intimate assembled studio audience, this recording finds Little Feat in their prime, live from Ultrasonic Studios in Hempstead, NY on September 9th, 1974.

Often discussed as their ‘best’ line up, this recording features the 1974 version of Little Feat containing Lowell George (Guitar, Vocals), Paul Barrere (Guitar, Vocals), Kenny Gradney (Bass), Richie Hayward (Drums, Vocals) Sam Clayton (Percussion, Vocals), and Bill Payne (Keyboards). With excerpts of this performance only available previously as a legendary ‘70s bootleg, this RSD Black Friday release is the first time the full-length performance is available, directly from the original pre-FM broadcast master tapes, and serves as an excellent introduction to one of rock ‘n’ roll’s best – yet criminally unsung – outfits. The recording captures the band cranking out songs from what are arguably two of their three best studio albums, at the pinnacle of their chemistry.

Wireless World (Transparent Green with Black Sweirl Vinyl) Sleeve

Nick Lowe – Wireless World

In true Stiff Records fashion, Jake Riviera (Stiff’s founder) and Nick Lowe were looking for any opportunity to mess with music journalists ahead of the release of Nick’s debut solo record. Jake and Nick had already learned that the album title, “Jesus of Cool”, would not be appropriate for the US release on Columbia; stateside it would be known as Pure Pop for Now People. Jake and Nick loved that the album would have two titles because it would lead to confusion. But then they thought “why stop at two titles?” Jake and Nick made it their goal to feed as many conflicting stories as possible to journalists, including giving fake album titles for Nick’s debut to interviewers. This resulted in one paper “exclusively revealing” to readers that Nick’s solo debut would be titled Wireless World. While Jesus of Cool and Pure Pop for Now People gave Nick his rightful place on the power pop plateau, the whispers of Wireless World faded away as mysteriously as they appeared. Now, for the first time ever, Wireless World is being issued on LP more than 40 years after first being reported. The album combines the track listing of Jesus of Cool and Pure Pop for Now People into one studio album. Wireless World is available for Record Store Day Black Friday 2020 on dustbin green vinyl.

Ozzy Osbourne No More Tears Picture Disc

Ozzy Osbourne, No More Tears (12″ Picture Vinyl)

One of his most successful and most popular albums, “No More Tears” is Ozzy Osbourne’s sixth solo studio album, a Top 10 album upon its release in September 1991.  Featuring some of Zakk Wylde’s best-ever guitar work, along with four songs co-written by Motorhead’s Lemmy Kilmister, No More Tears contains some of the biggest songs of Ozzy’s career, including the Top 5 rock radio hits “No More Tears” and “Mama, I’m Coming Home” (his highest charting Top 40 radio track); the album also includes Ozzy’s Grammy-winning song “I Don’t Want to Change the World.”   No More Tears went on to become RIAA-certified quadruple-platinum in the US, making it one of Ozzy’s two best-selling albums (alongside his groundbreaking solo debut Blizzard of Ozz).

Lou reed kk cover 3000x3000 300dpi

Lou Reed And Kris Kristofferson – The Bottom Line Archive Series: In Their Own Words: With Vin Scelsa

We bring you another historic, once-in-a-lifetime meeting taking place during the winter of ’94 on that venerable Bottom Line stage. Culled from an evening that also included Suzanne Vega and Victoria Williams, there was perhaps no other pairing more perfectly suited to the “In Their Own Words” platform than this singular meeting of Lou Reed and Kris Kristofferson. As much a course in music history and song writing as a performance, and years before VH1’s Storytellers series, Allan Pepper and Vin Scelsa’s ITOW series afforded the audience a window into the minds of their favourite songsmiths, in a run that lasted from May of 1990 until March of 2003.

The two songsmiths in question were born and raised in two very different worlds – Lou Reed in the jungles of New York City and Kris Kristofferson in the heart of the Southland. Still, both men demanded total artistic freedom and created raw, brutally honest art that addressed strikingly similar issues of struggles – with loneliness and alienation, addiction and recovery, love and loss, good and evil, vulnerability and hopelessness – painfully aware of contradictions and critical of hypocrisy, painting pictures of characters known or imagined, yet always finding the humanity in our faults and weaknesses during our darkest hours. Through the lens of their music, Lou and Kris view the human condition with a sense of humility and no small amount of humour, which was always close at hand.
