“Club Zero” is the first new song from legendary new wave band the Go-Go’s in almost 20 years, arriving just in time for Friday night’s premiere (9 p.m., Showtime) of the new documentary, “The Go-Go’s,” directed by Alison Ellwood (“Laurel Canyon,” “History of the Eagles”).

It’s a punchy pop tune that fits in well with the catalogue of the band, renowned as being the first all-female band to write their own songs and play their own instruments on a No. 1 album. The gang’s all here on the new single — Charlotte Caffey, Belinda Carlisle, Gina Schock, Kathy Valentine and Jane Wiedlin are credited as producers, with Anna Waronker (That Dog.) additionally credited as a writer. The self-produced track was assembled among band members “via email exchanges,” according to a press release. It captures vintage Go-Go’s vibe, with Belinda Carlisle singing, “There’s a place for us / Don’t look for us / Not on a map, it’s a state of mind” over surging power-pop guitars.

The making of the song, which was created via email exchanges between band members and recorded in San Francisco and Los Angeles with Travis Kasperbauer and Gabe Lopez, respectively, is featured in a segment in the documentary.

“We lived it and we survived it,” the Go-Go’s said. “Looking back on our history through this film, we get to relive our journey as a band: the fun, the adventure, the highs and the lows. We hope this documentary will show the world that we were pioneers, and how our experience paved the way for many other female (and some male!) musicians.”

The Go-Go’s, who were recently forced to postpone their 2020 reunion tour due to the COVID-19 pandemic, have released four studio albums: 1981’s Beauty and the Beat, 1982’s Vacation, 1984’s Talk Show and 2001’s God Bless the Go-Go’s.
