Empath’s stellar noise pop is a shimmering genre collage, cut with zig-zag scissors and pasted with a super-sized tube of glitter glue. The Philadelphian quartet’s forward thinking tunes continue to sound refreshing as ever on “Active Listening: Night on Earth”, dilating the infectious atmosphere of last year’s Liberating Guilt and Fear. Key cuts like the jolting opener “Soft Shape” and hands-down highlight “Roses that Cry” stitch synth bass and distorted samples, crooning vocals and inescapable melodies. It’s a slapdash scramble to “Rodeo Fever,” the stunning dream pop closer for Empath’s very solid debut release.
