WALL is one of the year’s most talked-about new bands, a New York four-piece with a tough sound that calls to mind the best early 80s no wave. NME described Cuban Cigars as “their breakout-hit so far – a strident cock-of-the-walk post-punker.” Who better than legendary photographer and transgressive filmmaker Richard Kern to direct the band’s debut video? A central figure during New York’s original no wave movement, Kern has worked with Lydia Lynch and Sonic Youth, among others. The band and director were brought together by Super Deluxe, a digital channel that makes short videos, original series and animation.
Cuban Cigars is the first music video produced by Super Deluxe as part of their nefarious plan to bring culture that deserves attention to the surface.WALL’s official statement on the song goes something like this: “‘Cuban Cigars’ was recorded in a concrete box in the dead of winter and inspired by the boxes in Manhattan where rich men go to smoke cigars and wash their money. Filtering The B-52’s through minimal composition, WALL created this song based on patterns rather than melody.”
