Heaven video directed by Tegen Williams & Raf Felner, UK quintet Babeheaven’s eclectic sound was born out of their appreciation of several different sonics like trip-hop, soul and ethereal electro. You can hear subtle tinges of each on their debut single “Heaven,” blended smoothly and cohesively in a way that eludes other bands who try to meld multiple sensibilities. The song opens with a slow, sparse synth progression, before an electric guitar and knocking rhythmic drums fill in around lead singer Nancy’s beautiful, floating vocals. There is even a bit of a Caribbean feel to the track as its elements wind and turn together seamlessly. The lyrics are powerful, developed initially from Nancy’s feelings about her mother passing away when she was young. Those original sentiments evolved into something broader but just as poignant, as the band says it is “about the front you put up and break down in front of people, and how things might’ve been different with someone else around.” This song is delightfully smooth, an excellent foray into more things to come.
Heaven is out on 7″ Vinyl on the 8th April
