Each track on “Glint”, Stolen Jars’ EP, starts with an impossibly small sound – a keyboard briefly glimmering in warm light, a finger sliding down the neck of a guitar, a chord strummed with just enough space in between the strings that each note sounds alone.

These are the small spaces from which Cody Fitzgerald starts. Fitzgerald, the group’s songwriter and center of gravity, started writing as Stolen Jars in 2011, and in its evolution his small and intricate introductions have grown into full and powerful statements. glint finds beauty in brief moments of reflection, elongating them with deft chamber orchestration, sorrowfully penned lyrics, and vocal performances from Fitzgerald and collaborator Molly Grund that guide each track from tension to reconciliation and back again.

NPR’s Bob Boilen named Stolen Jars as one of his top ten bands to watch , Stereogum and Consequence of Sound premiered the album’s singles, and the Village Voice ran a feature on the the band’s songwriting practice – Fitzgerald sees glint as a lens for his collaborative process. A constellation of musicians orbits the band – vocalist Molly Grund, drummer Matt Marsico, guitarists Connor McGuigan and Peter Enriquez, and keyboard players Grant Meyer and Max Finkelstein make contributions to Stolen Jars and push the band’s energy to its outer edges during live shows.

This staccato pop band wavers between arpeggiated guitar and electronics and a lilting, almost South African-styled guitar band at times. It’s that melody between two of its members — guitarist Cody Fitzgerald and singer Molly Grund — that keeps these six musicians from being more than just another joyous indie rock band.

The Dynamic duo Stolen Jars (Cody Fitzgerald and Molly Grund) are gearing up for the release of their sophomore album “Kept”. Building off their successes with their self-titled debut the pair released 3 songs as a taste of what fans could expect with round 2. The songs “Bright Red”, “Kept” and, “Folded Out” were offered for free downloaded on the bands website and they really are the perfect teasers for the new album as a whole. In comparison to what they released in album one, Kept is much more ambitious, but it’s been made with plenty of heart and soul. Unlike many other pop artists the duo have created a lot of the tracks themselves and self released with Fitzgerald composing and layering all the tunes himself, while together they created the melodies in order to put out something they can both be truly proud of. Kept is a really beautiful record, it’s soft, sweet and delicate pop sounds crafted with some indie inspired melodies. It’s very easy to listen too; both Fitzgerald and Grund have interesting but very appealing voices that work together nicely. There’s a really beautiful balance between their voices, the light, crisp tone of Grund’s and the edgier notes to Fitzgerald’s that bounce and blend against one another to create some really intricate harmonies. Production wise there’s an elaborate mixture of almost haphazard beats, countered with very precise, rhythmic drumbeats that make the delicate vocals shine through. The only downside to this album is some tracks do mesh together a little too well. They’re just very similar in length and sound, some musical change in the middle of the track list would have helped to boost the atmosphere of the record. If you pay attention and really listen to each track though you can definitely feel everything this pair has put into their music. There’s an infectious texture and ambiance that builds with each tempo rise and it’s clear to see that Kept is a work of art, crafted by two musicians who know what they wanted to do with 10 tracks. –

“Bright Red” is the third and final single off our upcoming album Kept, out online August 28th

Stolen Jars is an indie folk band from Montclair, New Jersey. Although there is a full touring band, we’re really talking about the duo of multi-instrumentalist Cody Fitzgerald and singer Molly Grund. They formed the band in 2009 and self-released their eponymous debut in 2011. They got some positive press, and one of those songs ended up in an Apple commercial.

The singles that have been released in advance of the August 28th release of their new album. and because of its slightly electro-synth folk sound, I was reminded a bit of Freelance Whales. Except that Freelance Whales uses a lot of glockenspiel, and although they have lots of coed vocal harmonies, most of the singing is done by Judah Dadone. In the case of Stolen Jars, most of the vocals are handled by Grund. Her silky sweet vocals are like red velvet cheesecake. Elegant, but not overblown. On most songs, Fitzgerald and Grund harmonize some, but on this one, it’s all Grund. There’s a second vocal track, but that’s also her.
