Depeche Mode The 12″ vinyl singles project continues with the release of “Violator | The 12″ Singles”.
A collector’s edition deluxe box set, contains ten 12″ vinyl discs showcasing the singles – Personal Jesus, Enjoy The Silence, Policy Of Truth, World In My Eyes – and key B-sides and mixes contemporaneous to Depeche Mode’s watershed “Violator” album.

From their earliest days as a band, Depeche Mode have championed 12″ vinyl, embracing the singular power of the format and the avenues of innovation the format opened up. The 12″ single allowed the band to explore new sonic possibilities while the tactile physical beauty of the packaging gave Depeche Mode room to develop a sophisticated and commanding visual aesthetic. Depeche Mode used their singles discography as a means of offering left field remixes and other delights for their fans.

Violator extended Depeche Mode’s increasingly mind-blowing run of 12″ singles (with a virtually unprecedented number of remixes for Personal Jesus alone). Violator introduced fans to some of the most enduring songs in the Depeche Mode catalog including Enjoy The Silence, Policy Of Truth and World In My Eyes.

“Yes, but what should I do?” questions a Siri-like voice before a crash of cymbals wash away the robots and a loosely funky guitar line takes our hand into Sundara Karma: Phase Two. If there’s one thing that’s abundantly clear even from the opening notes of the Reading lot’s next moves, it’s that they’re not going quietly into the night this time around. Firstly, there’s that new press shot: a gloriously unapologetic thing featuring frontman Oscar Pollock resplendent in a flowing blonde wig. Then, there’s the fact that the first words the singer speaks on his band’s big comeback are “Welcome to the abattoir/ Disconnected from who we are”. If Sundara always sat slightly on the peripheries of the indie realm – a little bit too overblown and literary to be comfortable bedfellows with the Catfish’s they were often billed alongside – then on ‘Illusions’ they’re not exactly dialling down the idiosyncrasies.

There’s a chorus that harmonises Pollock’s falsetto with a synthetic, Daft Punk-esque vocal effect, a warm, slow-building mid-song instrumental interlude and a final, whirring, spacey fade out (completed by cheering and whoops). If it all sounds like a lot, then that’s because ‘Illusions’ is undoubtedly packed with ideas. But what’s impressive here is that actually, Sundara Karma’s latest doesn’t SOUND too ritzy at all. Instead, it’s a laid-back banger that preps us for a record that’s undoubtedly going to go all in all manner of weird and wonderful new directions and shows a band cavorting around a musical playground entirely of their own.

5LP collection coming in Jan 2017
The first in Sony’s long running Bob Dylan ‘Bootleg Series’ releases – 1991’s Volumes 1-3 – is to be reissue on vinyl for the first time in 25 years.

The 58 tracks (when span the period 1961-1991) will be pressed on 180g vinyl and come accompanied by a 36-page booklet.

Most retailers (see below) look to be settling on a mid-£50 price point which isn’t too bad, although Amazon UK seem to be way off the mark at present with their price-tag.

The 5LP vinyl edition of The Bootleg Series Vols 1-3 will be released on 27 January 2017.
