In the past three years Kim Janssen has traveled around the world. Solo, with his 25-headed Major Cities orchestra or with his other band The Black Atlantic he traveled across Europe, North of America, Great Britain and also Asia for more than 400 shows. In all these years and at all these places he worked on his new album. It will be his second album, named ‘Ancient Crime’, will be released March 9th on the Utrecht based Snowstar Records.

Inspired by his years on a boarding school in Asia ‘Ancient Crime’ is a concept album that takes place in an old idyllic school, in a remote village in north-west England during the winter. A mixture of history, myth, memories, old and new verses and arrangements.
Most of the album was also recorded during the journey. Janssen recorded the Oriel Quartett from Marla Hansen (famous from The National and Sufjan Stevens) in Berlin. A drum set in an abandoned factory in Groningen, an organ in Almere, and the magnificent organ from the Catharina church in Utrecht with the renowned 100-headed Toonkunst choir.

A lush dreamscape of delicate piano and soft soaring vocals, “Bottle Rockets” is contemplation at its most enchanting. A moment frozen in crystal clarity, Janssen sings of homespun observation in a way that’s at once refreshing and innately familiar.

Conjuring “scenes of lights and voices in the backyard, superstitious nights of hide and seek with the neighbor kids, sparklers and birthday cake,” the imagery is as vivid as the track is ethereal.

Mixed by Chris Coady (Beach House, Future Islands) and featuring Marla Hansen (Sufjan Stevens, The National), “Bottle Rockets” is the first taste of Janssens forthcoming third album, expected for release next year.
