“You don’t know who you’re tangling with,” Christina Halladay belts on the closing track of her Philadelphia band’s second EP. “I’m a bad bitch if I please/ I’ve done it before, and I’ll do it again/ I brought many a man to his knees.” Sheer Mag’s anti-authoritarian attitude bends around Halladay’s powerful voice and charisma; they’re a blown-out Alabama Shakes for the basement set, taking their cues from a lot of the same ’70s inspirations as their Southern contemporaries, but infusing their sound with a hefty dose of gasoline. They make anthems for a generation of punks who need an extra kick in the ass to pick up the fight: “You’ve got to fan the flames/ You’ve got to stand up and break the chains.” II is matter-of-factly threatening, a rousing and intoxicating rallying cry to carry on the cause.

SHEER MAG – ” II EP “

Sheer Mag’s style brings to mind the loose, glam-inflected garage rock of the ’70s, but their music never sounds like it actually comes from that decade. Unlike bands like  T. Rex, or Big Star,  the Philly band records crudely and (one hopes) cheaply, capturing the essential details of their sound without sweating the fidelity. They are lo-fi in the purest sense and their quick-and-dirty 7″/Bandcamp M.O. is firmly in the punk tradition, as are lyrics about hard times or making your way in a corrupt capitalist world. But the most impressive thing about their two 7″s so far is that they are pure ear candy, with relentlessly catchy guitar parts and an undercurrent of sleaze in the swinging rhythms. This turns out to be the ideal accompaniment to Christina Halladay’s voice, which sounds pissed off and vulnerable simultaneously, a fuck-you sneer .  Sheer Mag have no illusions about ever hitting the Top 40, their music calls back to a time when grimy, riff-mad rock’n’roll still had currency in the pop world and at any given time might be found leaking out of an AM radio somewhere in your vicinity.

Like a more lo-fi Strokes playing T Rex covers, Sheer Mag’s recent self-titled EP was one of last year’s most thrilling listens. Frenetic guitars merge perfectly with singer Christina Halladay’s OTT personality, and she has perhaps the best voice in rock since Beth Ditto stepped up to the mic.
Philly’s Sheer Mag makes scruffy power-pop accessible enough to transcend the record collector set. They hit that sweet spot between low-frills classic rock a la Thin Lizzy and AC/DC and the energetic insolence of early punk, and make it sound as vital and exciting as ever through great songwriting.

Philadelphia’s Sheer Mag came walking straight out of a garage with its debut EP late last year. Their recordings sound like they were pulled from a 10-inch dug out of a pile of Thin Lizzy albums, power chords and reverb everywhere. Now, they’re back with another 7-inch EP due later this year from Katorga Works.

On first single “Button Up”, the five-piece ups the production value, but only so that it can emphasize the scuzzy guitar chords that run amuck all over the track. Don’t be scared by having to dig through all those thorns, because underneath is a full stroll of a bass, a simple ticky-tack of a drum, and a hidden gem of a surfy guitar line.
