Shady Elders, a 4-piece from Denver, have a soulful and ambient rock sound, and its lyrical qualities are deep-rooted in the unique vocals of Fox Rodemich. They have been together since 2011, having released their debut EP, No Favors, in 2013. The Night Air possesses a great atmospheric quality, and is a great addition to their discography.

Title track, ‘The Night Air’ is soulful and melodic, featuring a simple guitar line and deep vocals. Its simplicity is the reason for its beauty, and feels like the perfect backdrop for many a summer adventure. A keyboard part in the chorus brings out the anthem quality of the track, as well as well layered vocals and a guitar counter-melody. It’s nice to listen to, and transitions smoothly through sections and variations of intensity and depth.

‘Wild South’ has a great indie edge, with the combination of male and female vocals making for a great sound. The guitar melody once again makes its imprint on this song, with a screechy yet reserved interjection to the smooth and delicate vocals. While the lyrics are simple in nature, the depth and maturity of its delivery create added meaning which really attaches itself to the track.

In July’ is an obvious homage to the American summer, and as such, it is far more upbeat than the previous two tracks. Retaining delicate vocal harmonies, it still allows for depth and variation, yet the edgy attitude is apparent through the chorus. The track definitely conveys a summery tone, with a surfy quality to their instrumental sound.

‘Brynn’, the closing track, is definitely a highlight. The sort of track that makes you want to head-bop on the beach on a hot summer day. it is especially atmospheric and edgy for the EP, and would have great presence live.
