Portland’s Eyelids, which features The Decemberists‘ John Moen, and former Guided by Voices member Chris Slusarenko, have a new single out, “Slow it Goes,” which is the kind of relaxed, catchy guitar pop you’d expect from these two. We’re premiering its music video, directed by Slusarenko and John Clark. It was inspired by weird ’60s German variety shows and is full of face paint, go-go dancers (choreographed by The Dead Set Lead Society) and nonstop camera movement. You can check it out below.
In other news, Eyelids have a bunch of irons in the fire, music wise. They are currently working on their new LP, again produced by REM’s Peter Buck. They’ve also got a Record Store Day 7″ on the way too featuring guest vocals from Gary Jarman of The Cribs that is “projected post-punk that is written from the fictitious mind of a 17 year old.”

EYELIDS have turned inwards to their loves of New Zealand/Flying Nun guitar buzz , their teenage L.A. paisley underground obsessions, haunts of early Athens and all things beautiful, lopsided and rock. We give you fair warning

Portland’s Eyelids is the project of The DecemberistsJohn Moen, and Chris Slusarenko who was a Guided by Voices member in the 2000s (both also played together in the Robert Pollard-fronted Boston Spaceships). Their upcoming self-titled EP was produced by R.E.M.’s Peter Buck (who’s also contributed to The Decemberists), and his band’s jangly alt-rock isn’t too far removed from the EP’s new single, “Bound To Let You Down.” That premieres in this post and can be streamed below.

The EP comes out June 23 via Jealous Butcher and the band’s own Schizophonic Records, and features one other original song, as well as covers of John Cale’s “Only Time Will Tell” and The Dream Syndicate’s “Halloween.” A limited edition colored vinyl version is also being released, which includes a download card with three exclusive live videos, one of which has Stephen Malkmus performing “Hey Joe” with the band.

“Eyelids have a new song off their upcoming full-length album, 854, and while the title of “Psych #1” might seem generic, the music contained within is anything but. With cascades of acoustic guitars nestled against heaps of power-pop guitar, it’s a concise slice of psychedelia of both vintage and paisley varietals. 854 was released on the illustrious Jealous Butcher imprint on October 14th, From EYELIDS debut LP “854” This is the unsung supergroup of Portland if there ever was one. John Moen, Chris Slusarenko, Jonathan Drews, Jim Talstram, and Paulie Pulverenti really have some songs up their sleeves.  I am a sucker for this stuff and they pull off the pure power pop with aplomb. Eyelids  It’s not surprising that the band sound like a sublime synthesis of Guided by Voices, Elliott Smith, and Stephen Malkmus, considering the group’s members have played with all those artists. They’re possibly one of the only bands whose music lives up to the “supergroup” designation.
