when it came out in 1974 it was dismissed slightly as the last gasps of Ziggy Stardust,seen as Bowie’s swan song to the raw guitar style, but its an album that has inspired bands for many years since including industrial acts like Bauhaus and Nine Inch Nails,It was another concept album and Bowie’s eighth release Initially based on the novel by author George Orwell book 1984,but Orwell’s estate refused permission for its use  this was Bowie’s own glam-tinged vision. the main character is Halloween Jack a real cool cat,  with its echoes of Ziggy especially with the Bowie haircut and the glam style trash rock song and guitar intro “Rebel Rebel” also was influences of the guitar style of the Rolling Stones particularly on” Sweet Thing”  where Bowie used a similar method of cutting up style of writing as favoured by William S Burroughs. Tony Visconti reunited with Bowie to co produce and add string arrangements a role he continued for at least the next decade, The cover art caused some further uproar as Bowie’s half man half dog naked image across the cover
