The ARMORY SHOW – ” Dead Souls “

Posted: January 18, 2025 in MUSIC

Led by Richard Jobson of the Skids, The Armory Show release brand new album “Dead Souls” with Last Night From Glasgow in early 2025 . Against all odds, Jobson had managed to very credibly pick up where the band had left off. Now we see that the follow up group that Jobson had formed in the aftermath of the Skids with an even more iconic is having a new album ready for early 2025.

The band was The Armoury Show, but now that they’ve been rebuilt with an all new engine and chassis, Jobson has opted to change the spelling to Armory Show. He claims that it was his intention all along but was outvoted in the 1980s band for the earlier spelling.

Like with Skids, this will be a case of Jobson building an entirely new band to carry on the mission of the group. Armory Show were actually resurrected as a live act in 2019 with Jobson filling the group’s slots with guitars by Rory Cowieson and Nick Young from the Dumferline band Domiciles. The rhythm section for those shows was Nick Hernandez and Gil Allan, who went on to become the new engine room for Skids as well.

Since data is so thin on the ground at this moment, we can only assume that the album line up from those 2019 live shows have the same musicians in place in Armory Show as well. As with the last Skids album, The label Last Night From Glasgow will be releasing the new Armory Show album in early 2025. It’s called “Dead Souls” and all we really know about it right now

He never received the the full aclaim he deserved, but blues guitarist Rory Gallagher was Ireland’s answer to Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Emerging in 1969 as the leader of the blues/rock power trio Taste (they were signed by Ahmet Ertegun to Atco Records in 1968, but were overshadowed at the label by acts like Cream, Blind Faith and Led Zeppelin),

The group made three albums before disbanding in 1970, in order for Gallagher to go solo. By the time he embarked on his 1976 tour, Gallagher had expanded his power trio to a four-piece band with the addition of Lou Martin on piano, organ and synths. They blast off with ‘Moonchild,’ which borrows heavily from the riff The Moody Blues used in their hit, ’The Story In Your Eyes.’ Next up is ‘Secret Agent’ (not the song made famous by Johnny Rivers with the same name). The show moves forward with ‘Calling Card,’ which was Gallagher’s new LP at the time.

The rest of the show is a mix of tracks from “Calling Card” and staples that had long been part of his set list, including ‘Souped-Up Ford,’ ‘Western Plain,’(featuring Gallagher on acoustic guitar), and the balls-out rocker, ‘I Take What I Want,’ (which lifts The Beatles’ riff from ‘I Feel Fine’ during Gallagher’s solo).

Rory in brilliant form here. Great sound and the band are on top form. Great versions of some Rory classics. Most from 1976,

“Back Into The Garage” is out now! These tracks are the raw, unfiltered ideas that I initially demoed for our latest release “Back Into The Dream” but, for one reason or another, didn’t include in the album. Now, you can hear them in their barest, purest form—offering a unique glimpse into the creative process. I hope you enjoy exploring these snapshots of the journey.

The official release and 7″ includes 3 new songs: “Edge of The Deep Blue Sea“: Nice chords, melody, and lyrical references to the Oregon coast. Based on an experience I had many many years ago on tour. Ask me about it next time you see me. “Revival” Rive All? Revival? Not sure which one I’m saying, but it’s about the joy of Spring after a long long cold Canadian Winter.

And finally “Be Concerned” Me at my most Elliott Smith-esque. The Bandcamp release also includes a bunch of my demoes for tunes that did make it onto “Back Into The Dream”.

Unchosen songs rest, Once unmatched, now glow with time, Inspiration’s spark. All songs written and performed by Rishi Dhir

Montreal’s Laughing digs into a power pop and indie sound that culls from the College Radio boom of the ‘90s. Catchy to a fault and stomping out of the speakers on fuzz guitars and carefree harmonies, the record ably captures the immediacy of the era. The band most often flips through the second wave of power pop, with an ear towards Teenage Fanclub, The Lemonheads, Matthew Sweet, and Velvet Crush. Like those touchstones, the band has a way with turning emotional ache into insistent pop songs, hung on a crush of guitars and delightfully barbed hooks.

What’s so funny about peace, love, and understanding? Laughing are Montreal-based rock n’ rollers who take cues from some of the greatest pop songwriters of the past five decades. Four unique voices from across the Canadian expanse. Cross-stitched material and temporary ego sublimation serve them well in their pursuit of the holy grail: a perfect song. Their debut album “Because It’s True” is an honest attempt at inviting you in on the cosmic joke. Heap your praise, adulation, scoff, or scorn upon them; they’ll still be Laughing.

For their 26th album, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard swap the widescreen concepts of their recent albums for the intimacy of six good friends collaborating on the most bonhomie-laden set they’ve yet committed to wax. For “Flight b741“, bandleader Stu Mackenzie says King Gizzard “wanted to make something that was primal, instinctual, more ‘from the gut’ – just people in a room, doing what feels right. We wanted to make something fun.”

“Flight b741” is lightning caught inside a bottle. Across its 10 ragged, glorious barnburners, King Gizzard flesh out rough skeletons of songs with their inspired improvisations, inimitable grooves and a unique pass-the-mic approach to vocals that saw every member of the band raise their voice and sing. “We’re having a lot of fun,

With a dose of Cosmic Americana in their heart and a ‘70s glam glow-up on the rise, the band finds their compass pointed towards Little Feat but tipping into T. Rex and Slade. The record captures the band at their most lascivious, though they aim their leer away from carnal concerns and towards the lip of societal slip. It’s a pelvic pump of an LP that’s more concerned with environmental collapse than the sweat and swagger would let on. The King Gizzard has been glossed in synth, minced through microtones, and splattered across the official bootleg pipeline, but they haven’t sounded like they’re having this much fun in a few years, and I’m fully here for it.

On “Songs From A Thousand Frames Of Mind”, the kaleidoscopic full-length debut from Kate Bollinger, entire worlds lie in the small details. “When I’m recording a song,” the Charlottesville-born, Los Angeles-based songwriter observes, “my indication of whether it’s worth pursuing is if I’m seeing a movie in my head to go along with it.” Blending classic pop songcraft with scrappy punk instincts, Bollinger casts a collage-like vision that’s instantly memorable and uniquely mystifying. Ranging from homespun folk songs to warmly rendered psychedelic rock—like early Rolling Stones as fronted by Hope Sandoval—the resulting album can feel like flipping through your coolest friend’s record collection

Capitalizing off of her mixture of ‘60s folk-pop, ’70s Canyon cool, and a porcelain-delicate delivery, the songs on the debut carry a breeziness that’s expected and a depth of production that turns her sunny folk into layered pop dioramas. Strung between contemporaries like Sylvie and Weyes Blood and a link to the past that nods to Linda Perhacs and Susan Christie, the record is both contemporary and classic.

The album swings from Brill Building grandiosity to E6 psych-pop on a shoestring and Bollinger’s ability to make it all weave together seamlessly remains her greatest strength. The listener is transported, cocooned, and cradled with chambray melodies that swing in the breeze.

“On A Golden Shore” still finds the band inhabiting the later lineage, but they’ve let go of their grip on the darkness and desire of Hollow Heart. The band’s Richard Olsen has noted that the band were striving for something more ‘baggy and Balearic’ while still wading through the waters of Country. Their fifth album succeeds in its strive, carving out a sound that’s more homegrown, with nods towards the late ‘90s this time. The delightfully English spin that the band puts on the Cosmic American sound solidifies them as a true outpost in the East — the Starry Eyed and Laughing to Rose City’s Flying Burrito’s breeze.

This is wasted, soulful cosmic Americana at it’s very best, laced with toasty enticing jangling guitars, low-keyed romantic vocals, along with delicious melodic and airy harmonies that will ease a mile wide smile across your upturned face, nominated for UK Album Of The Year in the Americana UK Awards.

The last album built expectations, but “On A Golden Shore” has leaped over them with ease. “On A Golden Shore” the band toured the UK and Europe, hung out and played with our hero Gerry Love, worked on some new music with Bonnie Dobson, summertime in Sweden, criss-crossed Spain with Alaska Winter, spent time on the road with the legendary Sid Griffin…the list goes on and on. It’s been beautiful.

EGGS – ” Crafted Achievement “

Posted: January 17, 2025 in MUSIC

EggS second album. The Parisian pop band EggS has just released a new music single, “Head In Flames” to announce the upcoming release of its second album, “Crafted Achievement” released in November 1st, still in collaboration with the label Prefect Records for the UK. The ever wonderful EggS release their new album “Crafted Achievement” . “Head In Flames” is the first single to be taken from the album and continues with bands hypnotic mix of garage rock influenced indie pop. It’s a dynamic sounding track that’s for sure, boding well for the new album.

Smelting classic-era indie rock with an undercurrent of new wave and a few hardened garage touches, the band embraces an era of sprawling line-ups and ornamental embellishments. But leave the choir robes and Canadian arts grants by the wayside, because despite feeling like the heirs apparent to towering tracks from the early Aughts, the band offers up their version with no pomp and little pretense. Flecked with brass and built on soaring choruses, the new album buzzes with an unstoppable inertia. Pounding guitars set themselves opposite a heavier reliance on keys this time around.

The band’s influences and touchstones could be picked apart all day, but what keeps this a constant on the speakers is the energy that the band brings to the album.

This past July, L.A. band Beachwood Sparks released their first album in 12 years, “Across the River of Stars“. Sometimes, when a band makes a comeback after such a long hiatus, the music can be hit or miss. Do they still have ‘it’? Is this just a money grab? “Across the River of Stars” has the psychedelic country vibes longtime fans of Beachwood Sparks know and love. They did a great job of channeling their classic sound, but still making it fresh with new influences.

Across The River of Stars” shines bright, a prime example of the band’s West Coast winds. Balancing the gauziest textures of Once We Were Trees with the Americana openness of Tarnished Gold, the band feels confident in their own skin. The album retains Beachwood’s golden glow, buoyed by synths, sonorous harmonies, and the sepia-tinged twang that has long been their ally. With Chris Robinson behind the boards, they’ve crafted a record that speaks to their legacy, while pushing their sound to the forefront of the current cosmic crop.

ALUMINIUM – ” Fully Beat “

Posted: January 17, 2025 in MUSIC

Aluminum slice through the shoegaze garden with well-prepared shears — nipping the topline luminaries like MBV and Ride, but slicing deeper into Chapterhouse, The Swirlies and Drop Nineteens. Unlike many nu-gaze contemporaries, the band doesn’t see fit to stop at the foam and fuzz. Rather than just create a smudged wonderland that’s beholden to their influences, the band embraces the baggy beat of Madchester, letting it litter a few of their singles. They flirt with Brit-pop’s love of rhythm, the influx of rave, and the verdant sweat of Mazzy Star.

“Fully Beat”, overflows with tenured confidence and a singular style that deftly comprises shoegaze, big beat, and jangle pop. With influences ranging from Orbital, to Wipers, to The Avalanches and Sly and the Family Stone, theirs is a multifaceted take on established forms, fed through fuzz and led by honeyed, dual vocal harmonies from Bay Area post-punk veterans Marc Leyda (of Wild Moth) and Ryann Gonsalves (of Torrey).

Marc Leyda – vocals, guitar, sampler
Ryann Gonsalves – vocals, bass
Austin Montanari – guitar
