Nathaniel played a brilliant set of songs recently at the Bodega to a packed room his new album is a must purchase
Formed as ‘Nathaniel Rateliff and The Wheel’ in 2005, Nathaniel Rateliff has shared the stage with some notable names: The Fray, Bon Iver, and Mumford & Sons to name just a few. These names give you an inclination as to the style of music you are about to hear, and you won’t be disappointed by the Bon Iver-esque guitar that starts this piece.
What was surprising was the vocals. Less ethereal, more raw and yet still pleasant. They carry the same emotional weight that any track by Bon Iver would. The repetitive nature of the guitar and chord progression reinforces the theme of ‘Still Trying,’ before the song builds to the desperate cry of “this wound’s going to cancel me out”.
For me, the most enjoyable part of this song is the juxtaposition between the gruff, raw emotion of the vocals and the soft, droning nature of the guitar. The…

‘wire frame mattress’ is the latest doomed surf track The Wytches have sacrificially offered the public. Comparisons to Jack White are no surprise when hearing singer Kristian Bell’s grungey vocals, and over the psychedelically dark guitar riffs, the sound is like a bad trip….but in a good way.
this where it all started for me the first west coast band I fell in love with and so still original
“Hello, I Love You”, The Doors, 1968.
This song went to #1 on the US and Canada singles charts. It was also the first single from the Doors to chart in the UK (peaking at #15). More importantly, the album it was from Waiting for the Sun also peaked at #1 in the US. For it to hit #1 on both the singles and albums charts it must have been doing something right. 😉
still one of the best singles from last year love the opening chords
Temples are rocking some serious 60s/70s vibes. Think the Beatles, the Beach Boys and the Monkees; even their single artwork screams psychedelia. Since they hail from Kettering, the Midlands, UK, I’m not really surprised. ‘Temples’ are James Bagshaw, Thomas Warmsley, Adam Smith and Samuel Toms; and have been together since 2012.
‘Shelter Song’ opens with a classic 60s sounding guitar riff which is then interjected by the echoey lead vocals and accompanied by some lovely muted copy cats in the background. Everything needed for a classic psychedelic track. There’s not much more that needs saying. The guys do their genre and they do it well, even down to their look and their suitably trippy video to accompany the track. Someone find me a TARDIS!
Verdict: A classic, download it and chill out: enjoy with some chamomile tea!
