There is one big thing going for Squirrel flower, the Iowa-based project of Ellä Williams, Allow yourself some time to sit with this new track, however, and you’ll find that there’s more than enough going on here to warrant its own distinct place and time; a subtly intriguing undercurrent of vexations and dispellings that quietly bury themselves within your surroundings.
Lifted from her new, and second, EP, which was released in mid-December via the brilliant It Takes Time label, “Not Your Prey” is steel-eyed determination personified, a resolutely personal unraveling that melds tempestuous, fiery vocals with a hardened backdrop of electric guitar and a somewhat stifling atmosphere. “Don’t fuck with me…I’m not your prey, I’m not your kill…” Williams sings as the song reaches its restrained climax, the weight of sentiment both eminently palpable and powerful.
