Prog-rock’s best young band made a daring move on their fourth release. They downplayed one of their signature instruments—the electric violin, played by Raven Bush. (He’s the nephew of the great Kate Bush). Instead, the band stressed dual guitar filigrees, provided by Bush and fellow lead player Liam McGill. The sound made by this English outfit has always borne the imprint of Mahavishnu Orchestra, The Flock and Camel. But they make a far lighter and leaner sound than any of those acts. To keep the sound fleet, they rarely rely on solos. They also downplay thick riffs to accent lean fingerings, in the process giving the songs an especially brisk feel. Aided by flashes of electric mandolin and keyboards, the band’s highly-articulated sound manages to seem both clean and complex at once.
