Recorded April 1989 for the Sharon Temple Sessions. We were inspired to cover this song after seeing Townes Van Zandt perform it at a small coffee house in Atlanta. We had a day off and it was my birthday. The song took on a new meaning without Jagger’s faux-country accent, Townes sang it straight, as a song of love and loss.
Soon after that we worked up a version, which we recorded for our lost album,”Sharon”. When it came time to record songs for The Caution Horses, the song had drifted from our repertoire. Ironically when we went on tour to promote The Caution Horses, Townes came with us, and so Dead Flowers found its way back in to the evenings musical program one way or another. – Michael Timmins
