For a long while Marissa Nadler has shuffled away in the shadows, building up a back catalogue of consistently brilliant albums. Her music sits an a dark hinterland, somewhere between Carol King and The Cure. At times, this gothic splendour could easily have her confused for Lana Del Rey’s sister, but there’s something far more psychedelic and far-out about her spidery-web of songs. ‘Katie I Know’, from her forthcoming seventh album Strangers (out May 20th via Bella Union) offers fans old and new a dusty window into Marissa’s world where melodies flutter through oily grooves. Having heard the album, it’s little wonder critics are already talking about an album of the year contender and she’s recently featured on the cover of The Wire magazine. She’s a true talent and her time to step out from the shadow of endless critical mass praise is nigh.
